Best known for his ground breaking film Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, Joe healed his chronic urticaria (also known as chronic hives), and got off the pharmaceuticals thanks to juicing and a plant based diet. He’s in LA for the screening of his new documentary The Kids Menu! In The Kids Menu, Joe meets with experts, parents, teachers and kids, coming to the realization that childhood obesity isn’t the real issue, but rather a symptom of a bigger problem. The lack of knowledge of what healthy foods are. Lack of access to healthy and affordable options. And the influence of negative role models, whether a parent, teacher or even a celebrity.

All of this together seems to be a lot to overcome, but when empowered, kids often make the surprising choice of the healthier path.

In this inspiring and hopeful documentary, we see amazing programs in action, inspiring individuals paving the way for change, but most of all — Kids, taking the lead in getting healthier options on their own menu.

We first met Joe when we interviewed him for our film, Food Heals and his transformational story blew our minds!

Joe used to be in financial trading, and while his career blossomed, his health deteriorated. His weight shot up to 320 pounds and he was taking a cocktail of medication to manage a variety of health issues including an autoimmune disease. One bite away from a heart attack, Joe decided to take matters in his own hands and make a drastic change, and film it!

After 60 days of juicing and 90 days of eating only plant based foods, he was a new man. He knew his film, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead would have a big impact – it’s probably responsible for how trendy green juices are these days! Now, Joe has two businesses, a production company and Reboot with Joe, a community and website that helps people “reboot” their health.”

“We all know there’s a problem,” says Joe about the current state of our health. That’s why The Kids Menu showcases what’s possible with a healthy diet rather than focusing too much on the issues. Joe and his film crew went around the country looking for healthy initiatives, found the ones that were worth sharing – and the film was born! Without wanting to give too much away, one thing The Kids Menu shows how children can connect to the earth, and how positive that connection can be. Give a child the chance to experience food in a whole new way, from garden to plate, and they’re hooked for life.

“I like to think of a reboot as time travel,” says Joe when we ask him about his health reboot tips. Where humans used to have periods of feast and famine, today we see mostly feasting. It’s never been easier to access high calorie food, and at the same time it’s never been easier to do nothing, with elevators and cars moving for us. Rebooting your health is a bit like going back in time to a period when feasting wasn’t always possible. Without advising a period of famine or starvation, Joe is a convincing advocate of controlled juice fasting. When you juice, you extract the water from the cellulose of plants, water that is bursting with micronutrients, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that are essential to health. The first three days will be difficult, but if you break through something magical happens. Suddenly you’ll have all this energy, you’ll be calmer, your senses will be heightened, you’ll be mentally clear, your joints will feel better. And you’ll be giving your body a chance to heal. Joe’s tips for a good reboot: get 75% of your juice from vegetables and 25% from fruit, make sure you drink plenty of water, and if you plan to juice for longer than 15 days, add some plant protein to your juices. But even without rebooting or fasting, simply adding fresh juice to your day can help your body to heal and your health to thrive.

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Sitting here today, Robin looks radiant. We’d never guess that she had ever suffered from chronic illness. And yet Robin used to struggle with symptoms such as headaches, dandruff, brain fog, forgetfulness, low thyroid function, chronic pain neck, arthritis, difficulty walking, extreme fatigue and depression. Doctors initially diagnosed her with an autoimmune disease. But even at a young age, Robin knew there was something radically wrong with the concept of her immune system attacking itself.

Determined to get better, she started by giving her immune system what it was craving, what it needed to function optimally. She included plenty of antimicrobial and antibacterial foods, such as herbs and spices, in her diet, in combination with other holistic treatments like aromatherapy. Although this helped her to feel better, the real turning point in her health was when she was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Changing her diet and taking herbal protocols like the Cowden protocol got Robin back on track with her health, but she still struggled with fatigue and depression. When she started detoxing her body from heavy metals, her body healed and her health improved dramatically. Where she once found it hard to walk up a flight of stairs, Robin can now work 12 hour days, go out afterwards and still feel full of energy. She talks us through heavy metal chelation, the key issues to watch out for and how to detox safely.

Robin is organizing the Take Back Your Health Conference, and we’re looking forward to the many speakers who will be attending, such as Lisa Bronner who will talk about carcinogenic beauty products. A great selection of exhibitors is expected, handpicked by Robin, who selects only the best, most ethical companies. Holistic health, fitness, spirituality, supplementation, detoxification, business and more will be covered – we can’t wait to go!

Robin was diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and chronic Lyme disease when she was just 11 years old. She suffered from painful joints, inflammation, rashes, fatigue, fevers. The heavy medication she was prescribed caused digestive problems, nausea and hair loss. The drugs also suppressed Robin’s immune system, causing frequent infections and affecting all parts of her life. At just 23, Robin’s life looked set towards pain and disability. However, now 27, she’s healthy, free from pharmaceuticals and running the company of her dreams.

The journey to health wasn’t simple—at the time, childhood autoimmune disorders weren’t common and doctors were unsure what to do. Robin’s family was into healthy living and tried many different therapies to alleviate her symptoms – from juicing to acupressure to consultations with healers. But nothing worked. “We weren’t doing the right things,” says Robin. She soon realized there was a definite link between her illness and the foods she ate; wanting to commit to a healthy holistic life, she left college to study at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

Within a few months of starting at the Institute, Robin was giving cookery lessons, which soon evolved into one-on-one sessions and weekend yoga retreats. She was helping others whilst also helping herself. “The career and my health happened simultaneously,” she says, reflecting on how coaching others keeps her committed to a healthy lifestyle. Now successful, Robin bravely tells us that there were times she felt she didn’t want to carry on living, and doubted her abilities. Her story is a shining example of how anything can be achieved with determination and self belief.

Robin’s mission is to help other people improve their health and their mood, and through that start a global healing movement. She rightly states “We can’t tackle global disease if we’re all feeling as sick as I was.” One of the ways she does this is through the health conferences her company organizes. The Take Back Your Health Conference is about real solutions. Robin chooses speakers who have either taken back their health, or who help others take back theirs. The conference is not about offering superficial therapies that put a Band-Aid on the symptoms; it’s about digging deep to find the root causes of disease, and empowering people to make the changes they need in order to live a healthy life.

Dr. McDougall is our kind of doctor – passionate about health and promoting real solutions to illness, he thrives on helping people regain their wellbeing: “The sicker you are, the happier I am,” is one of his mottos. (Because he gets to help make you better!)

As a sugar plantation doctor, Dr. McDougall treated four generations of immigrant workers.

He soon noted that those who had been brought up in their native lands, on high starch diets with little or no dairy and meat were healthier and leaner than then next generations who ate a standard American diet and suffered from diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity. Further research on the subject confirmed his hunch – there are numerous studies, dating back to the 1920’s proving that a vegan diet high in starchy sugars (from beans, corns, lentils, sweet potatoes etc.) is the healthiest diet, and one that can prevent chronic diseases, including Multiple Sclerosis.

Since then, Dr. McDougall has been active in promoting a healthier way of living. His website is packed with free resources and recipes to help people get informed and start their healing journey. He also offers live-in programs and healthy travel adventures. Check out his free Color Picture Book, and in just 8 minutes learn his life’s work and how you can make healthier choices. The key component to health? Starches. “If you don’t open your mind that you’re a starcharian, or starchavore, you’re not going to make it. It’s the absolute key ingredient,” he says.

Dr. McDougall also fights to spread awareness about a healthy diet and change legislation to ensure doctors are qualified in nutrition as well as medicine. And he’s not afraid of challenging the food industry either. “Protein deficiency is a lie; calcium deficiency does not exist.” For Dr. McDougall, an entire industry has been created on the myth of protein deficiency. This myth-busting episode will change the way you think about protein and healthy eating forever.

Dr John McDougall’s Bio

A physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine, John A. McDougall, MD has been studying, writing, and speaking out about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 30 years.  Dr. John and Mary McDougall believe that people should look and feel great for a lifetime. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly compromise their health through poor dietary habits.

Dr. McDougall is the founder and director of the nationally renowned McDougall Program: a ten-day residential program that he and Mary McDougall host at a luxury resort in Santa Rosa, CA where medical miracles occur through diet and lifestyle changes. In addition to her formal training as a nurse, Mary McDougall provides many of the delicious recipes that make the McDougall Program not only possible, but also a pleasure. He and Mary are also the authors of several nationally best-selling books as well as the co-founders of Dr. McDougall’s Right Foods, which produces high quality vegetarian cuisine to make it easier for people to eat well on the go.

The McDougall Program is all about giving you control over your health. Most participants are able to stop all unnecessary medications, avoid surgery, improve their appearance and regain lost fitness. Sick people see doctors, healthy people don’t. Our goal is to make you healthy.Dr. McDougall has cared for thousands of patients for almost 3 decades. His program not only promotes a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits but, most importantly, can also reverse serious illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and others, all without the use of drugs.

A graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, Dr. McDougall performed his internship at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his medical residency at the University of Hawaii. He is certified as an internist by the Board of Internal Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Three years ago, Adam weighed 300 pounds, was diabetic, suffered from depression, and was addicted to drugs and junk food. Since overcoming his addiction and healing his diabetes with a plant-based vegan diet, Adam’s life has completely changed for the better.

When he noticed that his twin brother Bobby was in the same position he had been in previously, he reached out. A few months ago, he suggested Bobby move in, and follow the same diet and exercise regime Adam was on. Bobby accepted, and has been following Adam’s health routine for about a month in a half.

Even in such a short time, the results are astounding: Bobby has lost 20 pounds, balanced his blood sugar levels and improved his blood pressure. There have been challenges—change isn’t easy—but Bobby already feels happier and healthier and says looking at it as his very own “hero’s journey” helps to keep him motivated.

Adam and Bobby want to make the world a healthier place and challenge the stigma that surrounds mental health. “People need to recover out loud. We need to remove the shame around addiction” says Adam. They will be taking part in the Ice Breaker Run—an event that aims to break the ice around talking about mental illness. The run will be 3100 miles long, spanning from Los Angeles to Washington DC and its end will kick off Mental Health Awareness Week. You can follow their progress through their website and look out for their podcast- coming soon!

We also answer a question from one of our listeners, who is in the process of changing her lifestyle and wants to know how she can heal herself naturally and holistically, and the best way to come off prescription medication for depression and ADD. Thank you for reaching out! We always advocate talking to a doctor about coming off medications and doing so gradually. There are many things you can do to get your brain balanced, such as positive thinking and giving your brain proper nutrients. For the full story about Bobby’s journey, and great tips from Adam and ourselves on how to live a more natural and holistic life, tune in now!

Adam Sud’s Bio

A little over 3 years ago Adam Sud weighed 300lbs,  was a type II diabetic, a drug addict, fast food addict, and suffering from severe depression. Adam was diagnosed as a diabetic his first day at in-patient rehab.  After rehab he moved to California into a sober-living house.  Adam took it upon himself to reverse his type II diabetes and so he implemented a plant strong nutrition plan into his recovery program of medication and therapy. What Adam didn’t know was nutrition would become the backbone of his entire recovery.  Within 6 months Adam reversed his diabetes and today he is over 3 years sober and weighs 170lbs.   Adam realized that nutrition has an amazing power in regards to addiction recovery.  Adam became a certified holistic lifestyle coach and developed a program using nutrition as a tool for addiction recovery and relapse prevention.  He now run groups at sober-living houses and Intensive Out-Patient Therapy centers in LA.  He recently had the honor of speaking at Rip Esselstyn’s Engine 2 plant based health immersion in Arizona and has been invited back as a speaker for 2016.   Adam has had the honor of being a guest on the Rich Roll podcast, Running To Mental Health podcast, and has been featured on Forks Over Knives.

Prescription drug misuse kills over 300,000 Americans every year.  Adam Sud very nearly became part of that statistic, but he managed to turn his life around. He shares his inspirational story with us today.

Adam comes from a home where healthy living was encouraged. When his grandfather passed away from cancer, his father, one of the original founders of Whole Foods Market, became focused on health and wellness, running marathons and encouraging his family to eat nutritious food. Consequently, Adam wondered whether there was something wrong with him for liking junk foods, and by the time he was in high school, he’d rebelled and begun to reject the healthy lifestyle promoted at home. In middle school he was prescribed the ADHD medication Adderall, which he began to overuse, enjoying the feeling of focused attention and the fact the drug helped him manage his weight.  But Adderall is one molecule away from being street meth, and soon Adam found himself increasingly craving the drug. By the time he was in college, his metabolism was seriously damaged and he began gaining weight.

It wasn’t until Adam left college that things really took a turn for the worse.  He was taking six times the recommended amount of Adderall each day, and when he couldn’t get hold of it he would self-sooth with junk food. His self image was at an all time low, he had no self esteem. Nothing mattered except the drug. He lost his job, his life retreated into his apartment, he didn’t go out with his friends and his relationship with his family was strained. But, his father kept reaching out to him and one day Adam realized he had to do something.

He started rehab in September 2012. “The physical exam was dehumanizing”, Adam remembers as he thinks back to being 300 pounds and seriously overweight. The test results were frightening: he had high blood pressure, and his blood sugar levels were through the roof. It was the diabetes diagnosis that hit Adam the hardest, and what propelled him to making the lifestyle changes needed to fully recover. He started working with the personal trainer immediately. “If I’m the cause of my problems, I get to be the solution,” and 37 days later, he moved into Sober Living.

This was another challenge, as the food offered was “worse than hospital food,” frosted flakes and microwaveable pizzas—indeed most people gain weight in Sober Living. But that wasn’t the case for Adam. He started a diet consisting of oatmeal and egg whites, and as many steamed vegetables as he could handle — this was an act of self love and care, and the diet helped reaffirm his sobriety. After two months, he’d lost 30 pounds, and with the therapy he was receiving, was able to start liking the person he saw in the mirror. Adam also reversed his diabetes. He moved out of Sober Living eight months later, weighing nearly 100 pounds less.

Now, Adam has been a vegan for around two years, and is planning to run the New York Marathon with his father. He’s certified as a Holistic Health Coach, and has gone from hating himself to being the healthiest and happiest he’s ever been — and if that’s not a story worth listening to, nothing is! Tune in now for part 1 of this extraordinary two-part interview.

Lorelei Shellist’s modeling career started early.  After running away from home to follow her dreams, she moved to New York at the tender age of 16 with just $800 in her pocket from the sale of her car.  She obtained a modelling contract with Eileen Ford, and subsequently with other agents, but it wasn’t until 9 years after she first arrived in the city that she was discovered by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, and “made it big”.

She met Steve Clark of Def Leppard in Paris when she was around 23.  It was love at first sight and they were engaged within a couple of years.   Though the relationship started in bliss, Steve’s drinking problem led to their separation after around seven years together.  His death was incredibly difficult for Lorelei, and she also had to come to terms with the idea of not being a mother.  Yet it was also a turning point in her life, as it put her on the spiritual path.  She committed herself to the process of learning how to take care of herself, through meditation, nutrition and looking after her body.

Of her work with non-profit organization I Am Dreams with Wings, where she helps at risk teens, Lorelei states “God didn’t want me to just take care of one child or two children, he wanted me to look after lots of kids, and that’s what I’ve done with it.”  Hers is a truly inspiring story of survival in the face of adversity.   Lorelei is currently working on her fashion film “Skin on Skin”, a film about perseverance, courage and beauty, based on Lorelei’s own true story. And you can help make this amazing film a reality by donating through GoFundMe.  You will automatically become a member of the Siren Star Angel Dream Team, with access to the Facebook group, shout outs on social media, your name in the credits, a copy of the film and your choice of perk depending on how much you want to donate. There are many options to suit all pockets, from affirmation posters for only $25, to an exclusive Runway Runaway Collection zebra print chiffon scarf for just $70.  Also available are a huge hamper of YBF make-up products (worth $630), a day with award winning film director Robert E Ball Jr., time with Lorelei herself and much more – click here

Lorelei Shellist knew from a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up — but when her parents decided to move from LA, fashion mecca, to San Diego, where not much was happening, she decided to run away to make her dreams a reality. At 16, she was living in New York, working three jobs and going to school — although it was a hard life, paying her bills with quarters earned through waitressing, her roommates were dreamers and they supported each other in their dreams.

From being a supermodel, Lorelei Shellist went onto write her memoir “Runway Runaway: A Backstage Pass to Fashion, Romance & Rock ‘n Roll”. Her latest project, “Skin on Skin” a fashion film about the dreams that lie just under the skin, about following your dreams and discovering your true inner beauty, which will premier at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival in July. Writing her memoirs made Lorelei realize she had a story that resonated with people, and wants the film to inspire others to follow their heart. Listen in to find out the magical way the project started.

“Empowering people is my passion. When we give ourselves permission to follow our dreams, our genius takes over and no one can stop us! ”  – Lorelei Shellist

Giving something back and helping others thrive is now a big part of Lorelei’s life. Through her non-profit organization I Am Dreams with Wings, she teaches critical life skills to at-risk teens. Lorelei is also a facilitating counsellor with the Freedom to Choose foundation, working with inmates at the Valley State Prison to help bring them peace and joy. Her line of clothes is designed for every shape and size — elegant, fashionable, divine, affordable, comfortable clothes that fit like a second skin.

Tune in to find out more about Lorelei’s inspirational story, how she came about making her fashion film, making time for gratitude in life and how to follow your dreams. Don’t miss Part 2 of this interview next week, where we’ll be asking Lorelei about the love of her life and how she survived after tragically losing him.

We’ve got JJ Flizanes on the show for an episode that is filled to the brim with love.  We share our personal love stories, and ask JJ about relationships, finding the one, and the healing power of love.  We also answer questions from our FoodHealsNation — can you “screw up finding your soulmate?”

How did Suzy meet her husband?  Why did she leave abruptly on their first date to “feed her dog”?  What were the signs that told her she’d found the one?  Allison and her husband have been together ten years but they started out as merely neighbors – how did they get together?  And how did JJ manifest the One? You’ll have to tune in to find out about Suzy’s online dating rules, Allison’s romantic Hollywood moment, and JJ’s inspiring story.

We all want to love and to be loved, but we often neglect the first fundamental step to finding love: loving and healing ourselves.  It’s hugely important to let go of previous heartache and understand that each relationship in our lives is an opportunity to learn and grow: we attract what we need to deal with in ourselves.  JJ also shares with us some thought provoking tips on how to heal a relationship through taking responsibility, shifting our need for external validation and supporting our own growth.

If you’re single this Valentine’s Day, why not cherish this time and get to know yourself? Be that strong, independent person, learn about yourself – what makes you happy?  What can you do every day to bring more love and joy into your life?  Single or not, you can start by listening to our latest episode for a big dose of love and laughter!

JJ Flizanes’ Bio

JJ Flizanes is an Empowerment Strategist and Host of The Fit 2 Love Podcast Show. She is the Director of Invisible Fitness, an Amazon best-selling author of Fit 2 Love: How to Get Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually Fit to Attract the Love of Your Life, and author of Knack Absolute Abs: Routines for a Fit and Firm Core, and was named Best Personal Trainer in Los Angeles for 2007 by Elite Traveler Magazine.

JJ vividly reminds us that the word ‘fitness’ is not just about the state of one’s physical body, but also the factors which determine a person’s overall well being. And, for JJ, the key components in all these areas are ‘invisible’ — balanced support structures of nutrition, emotional centeredness and health. A video expert for About.com and regular contributor for The Daily Love, JJ has been featured in many national magazines such as Shape, Fitness, Muscle and Fitness HERS, Elegant Bride, and Women’s Health as well as appeared on NBC, CBS, Fox 11 and KTLA. For her clients & followers, JJ designs customized coaching programs and unique, versatile approaches that harmonize the emotional, the mental and the spiritual
