70: Dr. McDougall on Better Health with Vegetarian Cuisine


Dr. McDougall is our kind of doctor – passionate about health and promoting real solutions to illness, he thrives on helping people regain their wellbeing: “The sicker you are, the happier I am,” is one of his mottos. (Because he gets to help make you better!)

As a sugar plantation doctor, Dr. McDougall treated four generations of immigrant workers.

He soon noted that those who had been brought up in their native lands, on high starch diets with little or no dairy and meat were healthier and leaner than then next generations who ate a standard American diet and suffered from diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity. Further research on the subject confirmed his hunch – there are numerous studies, dating back to the 1920’s proving that a vegan diet high in starchy sugars (from beans, corns, lentils, sweet potatoes etc.) is the healthiest diet, and one that can prevent chronic diseases, including Multiple Sclerosis.

Since then, Dr. McDougall has been active in promoting a healthier way of living. His website is packed with free resources and recipes to help people get informed and start their healing journey. A physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine, John A. McDougall, MD has been studying, writing, and speaking out about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 30 years.  Dr. John and Mary McDougall believe that people should look and feel great for a lifetime. He and Mary are also the authors of several nationally best-selling books as well as the co-founders of Dr. McDougall’s Right Foods, which produces high quality vegetarian cuisine to make it easier for people to eat well on the go.
