Do you do your bit for Mother Earth? Chances are you have energy saving light bulbs in your home, take shorter showers, maybe even drive an electric car. You do this out of concern for the planet, motivated by major environmental group campaigns. And yet the single action that could make a real difference is never mentioned. Directed by today’s guests, Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, Cowspiracy explores the devastating impact of agricultural farming on the environment, and the conspiracy of silence which keeps it hidden from public view.

In this episode, we take a closer look at the Sustainability Secret and why environmental groups choose to turn away from the issue. People are hungry for change; they want real solutions. Going vegan can empower each and  every one of us to make a positive impact on the world, and our communities. Kip and Keegan tell us about their new film What the Health, which has been described as a combination of Forks over Knives and Cowspiracy on steroids—sounds great!

What you’ll learn in this inspiring episode:

  • Why environmental organizations aren’t talking about meat.
  • What you can do right now to make a difference.
  • (Celebrity moment!) How Leonardo Di Caprio got involved in the film production.
  • Why the scary stats in Cowspiracy are actually only conservative estimates.
  • Why grass-fed beef is worse than factory-farmed beef for the wildlife and the planet.
  • The one simple step that could stop climate change (and it isn’t everyone going
  • vegan – although that would be great!).
  • Why wild wolves and horses are being shot on public land.
  • How Cowspiracy was received and the change it has sparked.
  • How you can make a change (hint – take the 30-day vegan challenge)
  • How our diet affects everyone, not just ourselves.
  • Why the new film What the Health is even more powerful than Cowspiracy.
  • Why we’re in a whole new era of empowerment.
  • Kip and Keegan’s tips on raising funds for your business.

“When something is bigger than all of us together, then everyone wants to be a part of it.” You can get involved in What the Health by contributing on IndieGoGo. Your donation will get you perks, from an exclusive preview of the film to your name in the credits and even lunch with the directors! Get involved and be part of a community that’s creating positive change.

Kip & Keegan’s Bio

Kip Andersen’s environmental awakening came as a result of An Inconvenient Truth. After seeing the film, he began to recycle religiously, turn off lights constantly, shower infrequently, and ride a bike instead of driving. Andersen believed he was doing everything he could to help the planet by following the guidelines of national and international environmental organizations, but his life took a different direction when he found out animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction. He is the founder of AUM Films and Media, a 501c3 non-profit focused on creating films and media that promote thrivability, compassion, and harmony for all life. He is also an entrepreneur, as well as a certified Jivamukti and Kundalini yoga teacher. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo school of business and has called San Francisco home for more than a decade.

Keegan Kuhn is a videographer, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and professional musician living in the east bay of San Francisco. He has worked with nonprofit organizations and been involved in social justice movements for virtually his entire life. As a filmmaker, he helps organizations reach an ever-greater community of supporters with the highest possible quality films and videos. His film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American west filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets. He is motivated by a deep desire to shed light on untold stories of the most downtrodden in our society, and to raise to awareness through greater visibility of social justice issues.

Clean eating and detoxing saved Amie Valpone’s life. For years, doctors could not understand the problem and treated her symptoms with pill after pill, with no results. No one knew what was wrong with her, people assumed she was anorexic, or was faking it. Even when she was given 24 hours to live, and lying in hospital with morphine dripping into her arm, her HR department contacted her to say they thought she was bluffing, because she was blogging. It was at that moment Amie decided that if she survived, she was ditching the corporate job and dedicating her life to helping others. There are so many people suffering in silence, and no one talks about it. “I’m going to be the woman who comes out and talks about this stuff.”

Amie survived. She researched functional integrative medicine, and worked with naturopathic doctors to begin the healing process. Where conventional medicine had found nothing wrong with her, holistic practitioners diagnosed her with heavy metal toxicity, chronic fatigue, polycystic ovarian syndrome, candida and Lyme disease. She got off the prescription medication, detoxed her cosmetics, personal care products, household cleansers, and her diet. Where once she hadn’t seen the point of organic anything, she now understood that all these chemicals were leaching into her body and causing all manner of chronic disease.

But external factors aren’t the whole story. Autoimmune diseases are the body literally attacking itself. And what do many of us do most of the time? We attack ourselves with thoughts and words. We think we’re not pretty enough, thin enough, good enough. Most chronic disease is caused by both physical and emotional factors, and so it takes a holistic approach to completely heal the body. When Amie began detoxing, many emotional issues surfaced, all the trauma from years of looking for someone to diagnose her, of not being believed, and looking for answers. As soon as she started to detox her entire life, including holistic practices such as cranial sacral therapy and energy healing, her life started to balance. “I feel like a woman now.” She has energy again, and feels amazing.

Amie shares her story on her blog to reach out to others and help them heal themselves. She guides them through health tests, including one that checks for the MTHFR gene, without which the body cannot properly detoxify. Around 30% of the population suffer from this. In fact, high toxicity is one of the main reasons the body gets ill. This is where detoxing is incredibly powerful because it essentially gets the bad stuff out of your body. Eating organic helps the body cope with the bombardment of toxins. When you lessen your body burden, by giving your body clean foods and using toxin free natural products, you help your body to heal itself. “You can feel like that 21-year- old again.”

So what can you do to start detoxing your life? Make small changes every day. Amie’s tips include replacing table salt (highly refined and processed) with natural sea salt or Himalayan pink salt (unrefined and full of minerals and nutrients), and using herbs and spices to create flavorful food—herbs, lemon juice, fresh cracked pepper and sea salt: your mind will be blown! Use different oils to create new flavors – nut oils like macadamia, pistachio or hazelnut are delicious. If you’re looking for a healthy vegan way of getting creaminess into your life, try avocados, cashews, nut butters, coconut oil. Take a look at Amie’s MindBodyGreen articles on how to create tasty and nutritious food.

Check out Amie’s new book Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, which is full of easy tasty recipes that will help cleanse your body and home. You can follow and connect with Amie on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Instagram and Pinterest.

Adam and Bobby work together to make the world a healthier, happier place. If you’ve not had a chance to listen to their inspiring stories, check out previous episodes 68, 69 and 90.  We’re delighted to have them back to answer some listener questions.

When did Adderall become a problem?

Pretty quickly. Stimulant medications for ADD are chemically almost identical to meth (one molecule away), they’re basically just an amphetamine. The drugs you can get from your doctor are essentially purer and stronger than drugs you can get on the street. In fact, this year prescription drugs caused more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.

The problem with these types of medications is that you can become dependent on them. Your tolerance will grow and you’ll need increasing amounts of the medication for it to work. Doctors can only prescribe so much. On a physical level, stimulants burn out your adrenal glands, mess up your metabolism, and raise your blood pressure. On an emotional level, Adam found that he couldn’t even motivate himself to do things he enjoyed without taking Adderall first.

There is no medicine that can cure brain chemistry, and deciding to take the prescription drug approach equates to accepting that you’re going to be on drugs for the rest of your life. Give yourself permission to try alternative approaches. For example, change your diet for six months and see how you feel. Medication should be the last resort.

How do you manage your ADD without prescription drugs?

Diet was a massive game changer. 50% of dopamine and 90% of serotonin has an intestinal source, which means what you eat has a direct impact on how you think and feel. Start by changing what you eat—find the right kind of diet for you and develop lifestyle tools that will help you manage your condition. Pills will only mask the symptoms; they don’t get to the underlying cause of the issue.

ADD is also quite commonly over-diagnosed. We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with visual stimuli and distracted by social media; poor concentration seems very much part of the society we live in. ADD isn’t an inability to focus; the brain is focusing on too many things at once. Anything that allows you to be mindful, like meditation or running or yoga, will help.

It used to be that you’d get prescribed medication maybe once or twice in your lifetime, usually at the end of your life. Now things are different. By age 12, most Americans have taken a mind altering prescription drug. What effect does that have on a developing brain? Nowadays it is so common, there are pills to fix everything—but what about the long-term side effects?

ADD medication works because it is designed to work. It’s designed as a stimulant, and stimulants release dopamine and help you to focus. And you will get hooked on them. Prescription drugs should be used in emergencies or acute situations, not as a lifelong way to manage a condition. You can manage your ADD without drugs, with mindfulness, exercise and a plant-based diet. “It’s going to be harder but it’s going to be worth it.”

How long did it take you to detox from Adderall, and how long was it before you felt good again?

It took Adam about a month—at the same time as he was detoxing, he was working on overcoming a deep depression and was putting in place positive strategies like a healthy diet and going to the gym. Implementing changes from a place of self love is so much more powerful. “Do it because you think you’re worth going through whatever hell might be necessary,” says Adam. Decide to make changes because you love yourself, not because you hate who you are right now.

How do you replace the focus the prescription drugs give you?

Adam accepts that some days are tiring—but after a 12-hour workday, it’s normal to be exhausted! Ask yourself: are you comfortable with not being able to perform without prescription drugs? If you want something bad enough, you’d do anything to achieve it.  You’re afraid because you’re not sure how you will manage without the medication, but you WILL be able to focus again. And what’s more, it’ll be a pure—rather than drug-driven—focus. Another way to create that focus and motivation is to think about the goal; how are you going to feel once you’ve completed that task?

I’m using Adderall to manage my weight. I’d rather be on Adderall than be super fat. What’s wrong with that?

Bobby is taking 30mg/day less than he used to and has switched to a plant-based diet, which has helped him manage his weight. If you’re worried about gaining weight or your appetite increasing, start a plant-based vegan diet. It doesn’t matter how much you eat when you are relying on healthy foods! You can have as much as you like of fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, nuts, seeds, legumes. The pounds will still pour off! People have weight issues because of their diet. Adderall won’t fix that. In fact, using it as a weight loss drug is a pretty bad idea. Adam used Adderall to manage his weight and ended up over 300 pounds and type 2 diabetic.

Adam’s diet used to consist of cheeseburgers, pizza, breakfast tacos and sodas. Now, he has oatmeal and cinnamon for breakfast. He feasts on epic salads that contain just about everything. “Kale, spinach, greens, chickpeas, carrots, celery, beets, red kidney beans, black beans…” You can add an oil free dressing too—the ones from Engine 2 are amazing. Bobby has lost an incredible 50 pounds, reversed his diabetes and reduced his blood pressure. How? He swapped his fast food diet for Engine 2 cereal and almond milk for breakfast, and digs into big bowls filled with broccoli, corn, beans andEngine 2’s marinara sauce. And boxes of strawberries as snacks. “When you eat a whole foods diet, it’s almost impossible to get it wrong.” No calorie restriction or portion control is necessary because you’re eating what the body is designed to eat.

We’re delighted to welcome back Adam and Bobby Sud. These twin brothers are dedicated to making the world a healthier place. If you haven’t already, check out their inspiring two-part interview in Episodes 68 and 69. The feedback these episodes received was phenomenal.

Adam is a holistic lifestyle coach. He’s developed a program for treating addiction and preventing relapses using plant based nutrition. The mindful act of preparing healthy meals is an act of self care that reaffirms positive change. “It is saying that you choose to be a better version of yourself physically, spiritually, mentally, today, than you were the day before,” says Adam. Since recovering from Adderall addiction, Adam has been on a mission to help his twin brother Bobby, a passionate wildlife enthusiast and film-maker, get healthy.

Just a few months ago, Bobby was a type 2 diabetic, taking multiple prescription meds and suffering from depression. After moving in with Adam and following his plant based diet, Bobby is now on his way to recovery. In just three months, he has lost 50 pounds, reversed his diabetes and lowered his cholesterol and blood pressure. How? Well, in addition to a 100% vegan diet, Bobby goes for an hour-long walk 4 to 5 times a week. Eat well, give your body what it needs, and it will quickly return to optimum health. “It shows you how powerful the Standard American Diet is in such a negative way. It can allow someone to keep on weight, when it so easily comes off when you give your body the right fuel.”

But many people are addicted to processed foods and junk foods, which are designed specifically to create a high-dopamine response in the brain. They stimulate the pleasure sensors and create a sense of need for high sugar, high fat foods. Adam and Bobby believe that plant-based nutrition should be standard practice in addiction recovery and disease recovery. Once you start healing your body with a vegan diet, you can also begin dealing with and detoxing from the negative emotions that are keeping you stuck in destructive patterns. “If you leave out any one part, you’re missing the complete recovery”, says Adam.

“if you think I’m any less addicted to my current lifestyle, than I was to my destructive lifestyle, you’re fooling yourself”. Adam shifted his addictive personality from destructive to constructive. The “addiction” to this plant-based lifestyle allows him to make connections that give his life meaning. Adam knows he’s never going back to his old way of life.

Going vegan is probably the most powerful thing you can do to help the planet. “The fact is, you can drive a hummer and be a vegan and make more of an environmental impact than a non-vegan that drives a Prius or rides their bike to work.”

Adam and Bobby are about to embark on a big adventure. On 16 th May, they’re setting off on the Ice Breaker Run to promote mental health awareness across the US in partnership with The Herren Project and Mental Health America. They’re running across the country from Los Angeles to Washington with a group of ultra runners. “It’s crazy endurance athletes running for mental health.” For 24 days, 24 hours a day, teams of runners will take it in turns to run a marathon a day. Adam and Bobby will be doing a podcast and releasing daily videos—each runner has overcome some form of mental health issue, and will share their inspirational stories. At the end of the run, Mental Health America will kick off Mental Health Awareness week with the screening of Bobby’s short film about the entire trip. Follow Adam and Bobby’s journey and buy a t-shirt to support the cause!

The Sud Brothers will be back next week to answer your questions about overcoming ADD without drugs, detoxing from addiction and more!

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!
The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

We’re talking about the Healing Cancer in this Century Summit and answering your burning questions on today’s episode!

The Summit raises awareness of the true emotional causes of cancer, and different ways to heal and let go of emotional blockages that can hold us back and create disease. Get all the details at Foodhealsnation.com/healingcancer. The summit launched on 9th of May and until the 15th you can access all the speakers’ full interviews. Plus, sign up today and get two amazing free gifts! You’ll get a copy of Evita Ramparte’s bestselling book The Bliss of Cancer—you can learn more about Evita’s inspiring story and how she healed her ovarian cancer without drugs, by cleansing both her diet and her emotions in our Podcast Episode 57—this is a must read book! You’ll also receive a free distance energy healing session with Carlos Caridad. It’s a truly beautiful experience that everyone should take advantage of.

Our first question is from Pamela. She wants to spread the message of the benefits of a whole-foods plant-based diet, but has only time for one activity—she asks whether she should make videos or start podcasting.

Both are very powerful ways of getting your message out, but your choice will depend on a couple of factors: are you comfortable on camera? If yes, go for video. If not, you may feel happier podcasting. But in terms of reaching people, you’ll reach more by podcasting. Podcasts are what YouTube was ten years ago, there’s less competition in the audio-world right now. Plus, for the first two months of your podcast, iTunes puts you on their New and Noteworthy list for free – it’s a great platform to be on. Or you could try video podcasting like J.J. Flizanes – if you have the equipment and the time, go for it! But if you only have time for one, podcasting is quicker and easier to learn; and when it comes to reaching a lot of people quickly and cheaply, audio is your best bet. We are currently working on a class to share all our knowledge on how to set up and monetize your podcast – we’ll keep you posted, but you can sign up to get more info at FoodHealsVIP.com

Our next question comes from Monique. She wants to know how to give loving advice about nutrition without sounding like she is judging or criticising… or in other words “How do you tactfully tell parents that they are killing their kids?”

We’ve often wondered what motivates parents to give their children something from the “kid’s menu”, often something they consider unhealthy, just to appease the child. If your friend or client is making healthy choices for herself but not for her children, she might be feeling that she doesn’t have control, or she may feel it would be too hard to change the children’s diet. Kids take their cues from their parents and look to them for information. It’s therefore essential that parents teach their children that it’s essential to eat fruits and vegetables.

You can lead by example. Take her to places where children are being encouraged to eat healthy food, and show her how successful it can be; or tell her about celebrities, like Jamie Oliver, who are doing great work in that field. If she has a garden, encourage her to grow food and get her kids involved. There are certain people it will be difficult to get your message across to. So as much as we may want to preach the plant-based word and convert everyone, we have to accept that not everyone is receptive at this time.

For the second part of this episode, we spoke to Carlos Caridad, founder of the Healing Cancer in this Century Summit. At the tender age of 3, Carlos’s son suffered from an autoimmune disease called nephrotic syndrome, which was caused by receiving 23 vaccinations! The medical system didn’t offer any solution, other than to say he might probably recover when he became a teenager. But Carlos knew he couldn’t wait. He began using homeopathic remedies from a Homeopathic doctor in India. Following a friend’s suggestion, he went to Jo Dunning’s energy healing workshop and the very same day, his son was healed. Carlos realized there was something very powerful in those healing energies and since then has studied with Jo Dunning to clear energy blockages, as well as learning Reiki.

When Carlos worked at the Valley Cancer Institute, he spoke to hundreds of patient who were cancer free. Through these conversations he realized the clear relationship between toxic relationships, emotions and cancer. It’s now his mission to bring this awareness to others

There is a lot of evidence demonstrating the link between emotions and particular body parts and health issues. Sexual abuse for example is one of the root causes of ovarian and breast cancer. Prostate cancer can often be linked to disappointment or hurt in love. Anger can affect the liver. When we suppress ourselves at work or in relationships, we can experience throat problems. Learning to forgive and letting go of the negative emotions associated with past experiences can heal the body. Many of the speakers at the Summit have gone through emotional turmoil and are bravely standing up and sharing their story so that others can benefit.

When we heal our energy bodies and emotions, we facilitate the healing of our physical body.

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

We are hugely excited to be part of Carlos Caridad’s Healing Cancer in This Century Global Summit, which officially goes live on 9th May. So we thought we’d give you a taster by sharing Allison’s interview with Carlos.

The Healing Cancer in This Century Summit bridges the gap between modern western medicine, energy healing science and spiritual science. It will be attended by experts in the field such as Dr. Ben Johnson, Evita Ramparte (a previous guest who healed her ovarian cancer with a plant based diet – check out Episode 57 to learn about her amazingly inspiring story) and Dr. Oz’s Reiki Healer Pamela Miles. Carlos founded the Summit after holistic medicine helped heal his son’s auto-immune disease, to spread awareness of the alternatives to western treatments.

After losing her parents to cancer, Allison decided to study spiritual psychology. She knew nutrition played a key role in health and can reverse chronic disease. But she also knew that wasn’t the whole story. What about emotional trauma? Unresolved emotions—or energy blockages as they’re known in the world of healing—can turn toxic in the body and end up causing chronic illness.

Cancer is a multifactorial disease. It isn’t just about genes, or just about diet—it is a result of a combination of factors like diet, environment, emotions. This means that there isn’t a one-size-fits- all cure for cancer; you have to look at, and heal, all the causes. Beliefs especially can have a huge impact. Telling patients how long they have left to live is a big flaw in Western medicine—when a doctor gives a person 3 weeks, that person internalizes that belief and makes it happen. But you have more time if you believe you have more time. This has been scientifically proven by Dr. Bruce Lipton in The Biology of Belief.

Another exciting scientific development in this field is the ACE score, which was commissioned by the CDC. This is a study of Adverse Childhood Experience and how these experiences can affect our adult lives. It works as a predictor of future lifestyle and chronic disease, and clearly demonstrates the link between emotions and physical health.

Attitude is key to being your most vibrant self. What are you telling yourself on a day to day basis? No matter how healthy that green juice is, if you’re drinking it while criticising yourself or telling yourself it isn’t enough, you’re not going to get the full nutritional benefits. “If you don’t believe in it, it’s not going to work for you.” Setting intentions is a very powerful way you can heal yourself. Your intention can change the energetic structure of your food—simply intending that what you’re about to eat will bring health and vitality can make a huge difference to your health.

Ali_Carlos1

Allison’s number one tip to start improving your health is Write and Burn. This is something that you can do right now to open yourself up to loving healing energy. Grab a pen and paper and write about everything that makes your angry—really go for it, don’t censor yourself, don’t worry about your handwriting, just get it all out on paper. Then destroy it, burn it, tear it up, flush it down the toilet. It’s a spiritually and emotionally cleansing experience that allows you to release negative emotion and replace it with self-love.

Carlos Caridad’s Bio

Carlos Caridad became an energy healer, a Reiki Master, when after working as Director of Engineering for 15 years at the Valley Cancer Institute, an Integrative cancer Treatment in Los Angeles, California, his 3 years son was healed from a terrible autoimmune disease cause by excessive vaccinations: 23 at age  3…

His son’s immune system was so distorted, confused and messed up that attacked his own kidneys. He couldn’t urinate and ended up in the emergency room. After 6 months of suffering, his wife and he found a Homeopathic Doctor in India and an Energy Healer in the US who facilitated their son’s healing in about 3 weeks Carlos promised himself that if he found a cure for his son, since the medical establishment didn’t have any, he will spread the word around the world.

This is what inspired Carlos study, practice Energy Healing and to create the Healing Cancer In This Century, to bring a shift on consciousness, making the general public aware we are not just a physical body and how emotional trauma affects our health.  Carlos spends his time helping clients getting their message of health and wellness through videos on the internet, practicing and teaching Energy healing.

“I’m stimulating my hunter gatherer farmer ancestor genes by moving while I talk.” Ben’s podcasting while walking on a treadmill. Why? Aerobic movement stimulates neurotrophic factors, so moving makes you smarter!

Ben was, by his own admission, a complete nerd growing up: video games, chess, violin—until one day, he discovered tennis. “I fell in love with the sport because I had a crush on my tennis instructor.” Being bitten by the tennis bug opened up a whole new world for Ben, who began tapping into nutrition and exercise science, which he went on to study at multiple universities. He spent five years pursuing BAs and Masters in exercise physiology and getting certified as a trainer. While working in the private sector he became completely disillusioned with modern medicine and decided to go back to fitness. He opened up his own training studio, but working 14 hour days wasn’t sustainable when Ben’s wife got pregnant. Wanting to be there for her and spend time with his family, Ben started a blog, public speaking, and writing books like Beyond Training – Mastering Endurance, Health & Life.

He now does online consulting, helping people burn fat, boost libido, defy aging and enhance every aspect of their body. He also competes professionally in obstacle racing. “I try to live life to the fullest—archery, spear fishing, playing music, writing fiction—I try to optimize the body and the brain, and the spirit and the soul too.” Ben’s goal is to tap into the ultimate combination of performance health and longevity, and teach as many people as possible how to become superhuman.

“It all starts out with not watching TV.”  Every day Ben goes through a routine that includes 30 burpees, deep tissue massage therapy, deep breathing, kundalini yoga, and eating 20-30 portions of vegetables. All these little things add up. Ben’s routine is changeable depending on his body. He starts his day by testing his sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system strength with the NatureBeat app which he designed. This clever app allows him to measure his heart rate variability and the strength of his body, enabling him to adapt his routine depending on what his body needs that day. So for example when the readings show a strong system, Ben starts his day with burpees and hill sprinting, but if his system needs more rest, he begins the day with kundalini yoga or deep breathing.  Check out Ben’s blog post about this and how he’s combined it with sleep monitoring using the Oura ring to better adapt his routines to what his body really needs.

Sleep is massively important to Ben. Blue light, from laptops, phones and televisions, suppresses melatonin production, which in turns disrupts sleep. But there are things you can do to avoid this. For example, installing the f.lux app on a computer will remove the blue light at sunset, and the new iOs software has a setting that enables you to switch to night-light mode. Ben’s book How to Bio-Hack a Healthy Home teaches ways you can make your home a healthier environment for your body.

Ben is an entrepreneur. He owns his own company Greenfield Fitness Systems and is an author, podcaster, and public speaker—we think he’s superhuman! Home-schooled from a young age, he was an independent learner. “I’m hardwired to be an entrepreneur,” says Ben, whose dad used to run seven different businesses. When he mastered tennis, he began teaching his friends how to play, and used the money to pay for college. In college, he worked at a bakery, at a gym and at a pub. “I enjoy hard work, and I enjoy creating things,” Ben’s turned his passion for fitness and outdoors into his career.

And he’s teaching his children to do the same. For Ben, the positives of home schooling include learning at an accelerated pace, having plenty of freedom when it comes to what you want to study, as well as developing independent learning and motivation skills. Ben teaches his children how to list on Craig’s list and AirBNB, in a modern version of the old fashioned lemonade stand! Ben’s philosophy on education is: “Take a little bit from each of the different modalities out there to create a really good combination of skills.”

Dubbed America’s best new chef by Food & Wine magazine, Matthew Kenney is passionate about raising awareness of the many benefits of a plant-based diet. As a classically trained chef, Matthew felt his food was pretty healthy. Having always focused on health and wellness, he started to realize that a plant-based diet was a better option, not only for our health, but the planet’s health as well.

The transition to plant-based was both gradual and instant. One evening he visited a raw food restaurant with a friend. While the food wasn’t anything spectacular, the little place was packed with people who were glowing with health. “There was something different about them and their aura.” The very next day, he shifted his entire focus and became 100% committed to going plant-based. He saw the potential of what could be achieved if a classically trained chef applied his skills to plant foods. “That was my vision from the very first day and I’ve stuck with it since then.” Matthew’s brand focuses entirely on plant-based lifestyle, through education, hospitality, and media.

As well as being a restaurateur Matthew has written many books. One of these, Cooked Raw, tells the story of how he left mainstream cooking to launch into the world of raw and plant-based cuisine. Matthew is currently working on the 90-Day Raw Food Diet. The focus is on simple, tasty recipes. “Food has to taste good, it has to be appealing. It has to fill you up, it needs to have flavor”. The book is designed to be a tool to help readers transition to a way of life that is more in line with what the body really wants: wholesome plant-based goodness.

For Matthew, the best tasting food is food which makes his body feel good, helps the animals, and is environmentally sustainable. The only way to accomplish a food revolution is to show people that the most pleasurable, delicious, beautiful, flavorful food is plant-based food. The Matthew Kenney Culinary Academy was set up to educate and encourage students to explore their passion for raw vegan cuisine and help them create the best dishes in the world, that way sparking a culinary revolution.

The plant-based diet is a perfect roadmap for creating a sustainable way to feed the world. By simply making a diet more plant centric, everything becomes more sustainable – reduced health care cost through improved health, less stress on the land, no animal cruelty.

Matthew is motivated by the vision of what the world could be like if a switch to plant-based nutrition was made. Tune in to discover Matthew’s great tips for growing your own edible garden, why it’s important to buy seasonal produce, and how to create delicious, healthy, vibrant sauces to transform your veggies into taste sensations!

Firstly, a massive thank you to Sabrina, who sent us Levo Wine, biodynamic organic wine from Santa Barbara County—it is delicious, flavorful, dry at the finish, we love it!

Our first question comes from Tiffany. She was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura). As so many people in similar situations, she was given steroids and told that diet and lifestyle made no difference to the condition. However, since listening to Food Heals, she’s gotten off the medication and is feeling full of energy. Despite this, she finds herself struggling with stress and anxiety, and asks for some DIY tips and tricks to train the mind towards positive thinking and self love.

Well, firstly we want to give you a massive thumbs up for taking your health into your own hands and getting off the meds! Autoimmune diseases seem to be on the rise, and we’ve discussed these at length with several of our guests; check out Episode 71 with Robin Shirley and Episode 48 with and Ann Boroch to learn more. We know however, that a change of diet and a change of mind-set can reverse these conditions: autoimmune diseases do not have to be a life sentence. You’re on the right path!

Moving on to self love. We know all about depression and feeling low. Suzy struggled for years with clinical depression, and Allison experienced great loss in her life. So, day to day, what can you do? Depression happens when you torment yourself about your past, while anxiety is caused by worrying about the future. When you’re truly present, in the moment, you’re free from those feelings—you’re neither in the past nor the future. In the words of Deepak Chopra, “you can only manifest abundance when you’re in the present”.

Our second question comes from Jennifer. She is a marathon runner, and has eight children which she home schools. She’s always extremely busy and suffers from anxiety. Medication and therapy have helped, but the results don’t last and she’s looking for a more holistic approach. We asked Master Intuitive and Love Coach Tracy Crossley to answer Jennifer’s question. Check out Episode 58 when we interviewed Tracy about intuition, reincarnation, and being yourself. Tracy senses that Jennifer is spending all her time looking after others but not taking care of herself. Anxiety is a merry-go- round, thoughts going round and round non stop—and usually these thoughts have nothing to do with the actual anxiety, because anxiety is related to the deep beliefs you hold about yourself and your trust in the world.

Meditation, journaling, and putting in place more loving self care are great first steps to understanding what is going on in your mind, letting go of anxiety, and stepping into a new, more peaceful self.

We know that our listeners are after some practical steps, so here are our best tips to let go of the past that holds you back, start loving yourself and being your best:

Lose Yourself

Lose yourself in the present moment. Find something that you love to do, whether that’s dancing, writing, spending time with your family, walking your dog. Be fully present in those moments, recognize them, and write them down. These times of peace will help you in meditation to more deeply connect with yourself and work on whatever you need to, whether that is letting go of painful emotions or setting positive intentions.

Tap into Your Pleasure

Check out the book Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts, which teaches women how to tap into their pleasure (take that as you will!). It is another way of tapping into the present moment and connecting with your inner goddess.

Write and Burn

This is Allison’s favorite way of getting over regrets about the past and fear of the future. Find a quiet moment alone, in a safe space, where you know you will not be disturbed. Set your intention that you will let go of everything that doesn’t serve you, and invite loving energy to come in. Start writing—or verbal vomiting—everything that gets to you. Begin with what’s annoying you superficially (job, friends, whatever), and as you do, you’ll notice that what you write about gets deeper or older. Take as long as you need, there’s no “right” amount of time. When you feel like you’ve written everything, it’s time to get rid of it. Burn it, tear it up, cross it out, destroy it. As you do, all that negative stuff will leave your body, and you will feel flooded with loving energy. This is a really strong tool, but you can’t just do it once. Often our emotions have layers and it will take more than just one write & burn session to get it all out. Don’t give up and you will heal yourself.

Loving Routine

Include healing and self loving behaviors to your daily routine. Whether it’s write & burn, meditation, exercise, diet—make it a part of your routine, make it a commitment, make it a habit. One time is great, but the more you do it, the more you’re healing and the more you’ll be in a happy, peaceful state.

Workout

Exercise is another way of getting you into the present moment. Whatever exercise might feel good to you—running, walking, fitness classes. Yoga and meditation are fantastic tools because they help you connect with the present moment through being in tune with your body and your breath.

EFT

Try Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). It can free you of a lot of things, from trapped emotions to physical pain. Better still, you can do it in your own home, for free. Check out Brad Yates, Nick Orter and Gabrielle Bernstein and YouTube.

Gratitude

Gratitude and compassion are powerfully healing emotions. Compassion brings you closer to everyone else, and unites us. Look back on your experiences with love and gratitude—although this may feel difficult, everything that has happened in your life is part of who you are.

We were so excited to interview Food Network fan favorite Charles Chen. A celebrity chef and regular wellness event host, Charles advocates a holistic approach to healthy living that takes care of the physical, the emotional and the spiritual. He fell in love with cooking, and that’s when the journey started. “I love the work that I do, I’m super passionate about it.” For Charles, it’s all about making a difference.

But Charles wasn’t always healthy. Spending the first years of his life in Taiwan, he found it hard to settle in the US. His parents’ divorce and a difficult time at school took its toll on him—he used junk food to numb his emotions. By the age of 15, Charles was at rock bottom. At 260 pounds, he was tired all the time and unmotivated. His wake up call came during a routine check up when he was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. “It was a huge wake up call,” he knew he had to change his lifestyle.

Setting the intention to get healthy or lose weight can be incredibly hard. “That’s why you have to connect it to a bigger picture.” Charles felt he wanted to be of service to the world, to help others transform their lives. With this in mind, he set about healing himself. His transformation didn’t just come from a change of diet, it came from completely overhauling his thoughts and shifting to a more positive, mindful and loving state of mind.

He went from eating a diet of highly processed nutrient-deficient food to cooking meals from fresh produce. After just one week of eating high vibrational fruits and vegetables from the farmers’ market, Charles noticed a shift. His mood improved, his energy levels skyrocketed. Meditating and being mindful helped. “It doesn’t matter how healthy your diet is, if your mind is not in a loving state, you’re not going to process or absorb any of the nutrients.” Likewise, Charles recommends eating healthy food in a state of gratitude, giving thanks to the farmers and the people who made the food available. It’s important to be in tune with the body and to look at health from a physical, emotional and spiritual standpoint. If someone is eating everything right but isn’t feeling the benefits, they need to ask themselves: is there another reason behind that? Perhaps something they haven’t let go of, a person they haven’t forgiven (including themselves)?

Do you want to know how to stop counting calories, ditch those scales, release guilt and shame, and experience no-deprivation living? Charles shares his philosophy and tips on living your dream life. Discover how to become more in tune with your body and nurture your health on a physical, spiritual and emotional level. “The universe is conspiring for your dreams to come true – you just have to allow it and recognize it.”
