Magda Freedom Rod is an environmentalist and lifestyle guide. Through her website Visionary-Lifestyle.com, she helps people achieve their highest potential with conscious eating, yoga and meditation. If you’ve not listened to them yet, check out episodes 24 and 74 where Magda talks about the environmental impact of factory farming, why she is passionate about being a vegan, her e-course Conscious Eating and how to set new intentions for Spring.

Earth Day is an opportunity to love Mother Earth and be thankful for all that she provides. “99.9% of people don’t make the connection that their food choices impact the environment in a major way.” Concern for the planet’s health is what first made Magda switch to a plant based diet. She loves Earth Day and helping people to think about their reducing their impact on the planet.

What is one thing that we can do to start reducing our carbon footprint and take care of Mother Earth? “Three simple words: Eat More Plants. The more plants you eat, the less meat you eat, and the lighter your footprint on the planet.” Thanks to documentaries such as Cowspiracy (if you’ve not seen this, we highly recommend it!) more and more people are becoming aware of the destructive impact of intensive agriculture. The word is getting out! Going vegan is not just good for the body, it’s good for the planet too.

Magda talked us through just some of the factors that make intensive animal farming so detrimental to Mother Earth:

  • Climate change: Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, which is the biggest threat to human survival. The methane from the cows and the deforestation of the rainforest for cattle grazing are the two main factors at play. And grass fed cows are just as guilty, if not more—they produce 40-60% more methane!
  • Overfishing: In 90% of the oceans, big fish are gone. We’re fishing at unsustainable rates and the ocean simply isn’t replenishing. What’s more, for every pound of seafood, there are 5 pounds of bi-kill (whales, dolphins, sea turtles, endangered species that are caught in the nets at the same time.)
  • Pollution: Toxic waste from animal farms leeches into the soil and contaminates ground water. We were shocked by this video showing animal feces being sprayed into the environment.
  • Species extinction through habitat destruction: A perfect example is the cute koala, which will be extinct by 2030 because it’s home is being cleared out to make space for… grass fed cattle! A great film to watch is Racing Extinction by Louie Psihoyos.
  • Amazon rainforest destruction: The lungs of the planet are being destroyed at the crazy rate of an acre a second! 91% of the Amazon has been decimated for animal agriculture.
  • Fresh water: It takes 2500-5000 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef. 50% of the water in the US is used for animal agriculture. Is that a sustainable practice on a planet plagued with drought? We don’t think so!! Especially when a pound of quinoa, rice, greens or hemp can be produced using under 150 gallons of water.

We are facing a frightening situation, and yet if everyone switched to a plant-based diet, Mother Earth would regenerate itself. “Our personal choices are actually really powerful,” says Magda. The more people are inspired to eat more plants and less animals, the faster the world can heal.

Magda’s six-week program Conscious Eating 101 contains all the resources you need to start loving both yourself and Mother Earth. With recipes, videos, homework and books you can deepen your knowledge and transition into a healthier plant based diet. Be part of the solution. Honor Mother Earth and eat more plants!

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Motivated by a desire to prove that going gluten free can be both fun and easy, Emily founded Gluten Free with Emily to provide people with resources and recipes to help them remove this ingredient from their diet. She started making YouTube videos only two years ago, and is also working on a book. Emily is passionate about her business and works on it day by day to grow it into a success. “I know it will be really rewarding in the end.”

“If your digestion is off, everything is off,” and the increase in people going gluten-free points to many people not feeling good. Even in tiny quantities, gluten can have a reactionary effect on the gut. “Sometimes more than people realise,” says Emily.

Gluten is only found in modern grains—ancient grains like rice, quinoa, amaranth, do not contain any. Wheat has been modified so drastically since the industrial revolution that the human body hasn’t evolved to cope with it. Add to that GMO practices and you’ve got a substance that is impossible to digest. Wheat causes gut inflammation in everyone, not only those suffering from celiac or gluten allergy. This eventually leads to autoimmune diseases and other health issues. In fact, food has changed a lot in the last couple of decades, just look at the size of vegetables in shops these days! The way we’ve changed food has had a massive impact on people’s health.

Emily has celiac, which is an autoimmune disease triggered by eating gluten. Celiac isn’t the same as a gluten allergy, though both share many symptoms and are managed by avoiding gluten. But thankfully, going gluten free doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of boring food!

“I wanted to make gluten free baked goods that actually taste amazing.” Emily knows the baking element is really important to people and her recipes reflect this—we sampled some of her coconut chocolate caramel cookies during the show and OMG—AMAZING! When she became gluten free 14 years ago, Emily started to experiment with different flours – she has 15 different ones in her kitchen!

Gluten free has become a bit of a buzz word lately—everyone seems to be doing it. But it’s important to keep checking labels, because some of the ingredients used to replace gluten are far from healthy! A lot of gluten free options in the grocery stores are really processed, so you might have a whole host of other issues to deal with. Emily encourages people to go back to whole foods—it doesn’t have to be difficult, there are so many delicious recipes out there.

The burning question for anyone thinking of going gluten free: how do I eat gluten free bread? Unfortunately, the bread situation is pretty sad. Emily has gluten free and grain free bread recipes on her website, but tries to steer people away from bread dependency. Many of the breads you can buy in the store are really processed, some even contain corn syrup! Lettuce wraps, leaf wraps, and nori rolls are all great alternatives to a wheat sandwich.

Emily tells us all about why it’s important to buy the best, freshest, highest quality produce possible, and why cooking in your own kitchen is better for your gut health. She also shares her favorite date spots for vegan, plant based and delicious food. Plus, find out how to make vegan, gluten-free strawberry pesto in just 5 minutes using only 6 ingredients!

Emily Turner’s Bio

She brings the bright side to living a plant based lifestyle, with treats and healthy eats that are truly delicious. By creating one-of-a-kind foods there has yet to be a gluten-free version of something she hasn’t mastered when given the challenge. She makes it fun to be in the kitchen cooking, so you can enjoy a healthy, happy, and satisfying diet.  You can find her on YouTube at YouTube.com/glutenfreewithemily and on her website www.glutenfreewithemily.com

Chris Guillebeau became an entrepreneur when he was just 19 years old. After trying a series of conventional jobs, he realized he had to do something else. “I was a terrible employee, I didn’t want to work for anybody else,” says Chris. He wanted to create freedom and independence for himself, and now dedicates his life to the worthwhile combination of highly personal goals and service to others.

Chris got bitten by the travel bug while he was an aid worker. He set up his first blog, The Art of Nonconformity in 2008 to chronicle his journey around the world and share his experiences. The blog also teaches people how to travel-hack and empowers readers with tools and research to help them make the jump to a way of life that’s more aligned with their values. Chris’s philosophy centers around living an authentic life: “You don’t have to live your life the way other people expect.” What kind of life do you want to experience?

We know many of our listeners are keen to start their own businesses, but there can be a lot of fear involved in that decision – for Chris, the key is motivation. “Follow your passion and the money will follow.” He encourages budding entrepreneurs not to let fear make the decisions. Instead, base your choices around three key principles: Joy (what you like to do), money (something that’s financially viable) and flow (something that uses your unique skills.)

Chris’s new book Born for This: How to Find the Work You Are Meant to Do centers around those three key components and is the culmination of years of research on people who have found or created their dream job. Chris will be on a 30-city tour to promote the book, check out www.bornforthisbook.com for details. If you go, make sure you say hi to Chris from Food Heals Nation!

For budding entrepreneurs, Chris has one key recommendation: make sure your message and your mission are clear. You can figure out the logistics later – social media won’t matter if you have nothing to say. “Your message should be one of empowerment and change.” Find your tribe, that group of people who is as passionate about your topic as you are.

Tune in and find out how Chris visited every country in the world before he turned 35, how he funded his trip and how he grew his online business into a success! And of course, tips to start living the life of your dreams!

Chris Guillebeau’s Bio

Chris Guillebeau is a New York Times bestselling author and modern-day explorer.  During a lifetime of self-employment that included a four-year commitment as a volunteer executive in West Africa, he visited every country in the world (193 in total) before his 35th birthday. Since then he has modeled the proven definition of an entrepreneur: “Someone who will work 24 hours a day for themselves to avoid working one hour a day for someone else.”

Chris’s first book, The Art of Non-Conformity, was translated into more than twenty languages. His second book, The $100 Startup, was a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, selling more than 300,000 copies worldwide. His latest book, The Happiness of Pursuit, was published in September 2014 and was also a New York Times bestseller.

Every summer in Portland, Oregon, Chris hosts the World Domination Summit, a gathering of creative, remarkable people with thousands in attendance. Chris is also the founder of Pioneer Nation, Unconventional Guides, the Travel Hacking Cartel, and numerous other projects.

Our Food Heals Group is obsessed with today’s guest, who also happens to be one of our favorites – Intuitive Life Coach Alida McDaniel is back for another episode! For twenty years, Alida struggled with chronic health conditions, but she overcame them all naturally – it’s an amazingly inspiring story so if you’ve not heard it, check out episodes 43 and 65!

Alida has over a decade’s worth of experience in holistic health coaching, 12 strand DNA healing, intuitive business coaching, spiritual psychology, quantum consciousness and more, she’s a real fountain of knowledge and we love talking to her! She’s currently setting up the Goddess Intelligence Academy, part of her AmbassadorForGoodness website, which will offer programs dedicated to intuitive eating, conscious business, manifestation, positive mind-set and more. Alida is working on an exciting new podcast entitled I am Life, where she will get down and dirty with some controversial subjects.

Today we asked Alida about fear; how can we break away from the fear that holds us back from achieving our highest potential? We all have self-limiting beliefs, which create fear within ourselves, so the first step to overcoming it is self-awareness. “We don’t truly understand who and what we really are because fear is so heavily guarding and running our lives,” says Alida. Through self awareness and taking ownership of your life, you can begin to break away from fear and start living in alignment with your goals. Creating a Code of Conduct for yourself is part of that process and allows you begin making positive changes that will lead to a blissful life.

Do you ever make promises to yourself and then break them? We’ve all been there right, who hasn’t given into that cookie mid-way through a diet? But the more we break those promises to ourselves, the less we feel self trust. And the more we judge ourselves for the past, the less we trust ourselves. So we have to start doing things that are trustworthy. By making small achievements each day, you can start building that trust within yourself. And the more you trust yourself, the easier it is for you to be led by your higher power.

What about balance? Many consider it to be achieved through a balancing act, multitasking and juggling various tasks each day. “There’s no growth in balance, there’s no challenge or passion or inspiration,” says Alida. Balance comes from playing all in, being fully present and fully committed to your passion, purpose and goal.

Alida guides us through her process of positive manifestation (find out how she manifested an entire year’s education!) and shares her tips on how to become the person you truly want to be. And if this episode was too short for you, as it was for us, don’t worry—Alida will be back at a later date for more musings about manifestation and to tell us about her exciting new book!

Today is a very special day: Jason Wrobel’s new book, Eaternity, is out (in the UK and Canada too!). Becoming a published author is a dream come true for Jason, who’s loved books from a young age.

Eaternity isn’t your ordinary cookbook, where entrées follow appetizers and desserts follow main courses. Instead, each of the 14 chapters focuses on benefits. Want better sex? Turn to Chapter 1 for recipes packed with mojo-boosting ingredients. Looking to sculpt and tone? Turn to the Eat for Muscle chapter for body building recipes. Struggling with insomnia? Eat for Better Sleep will help soothe you to slumber with natural foods.

There’s something in Eaternity to please everyone. “I didn’t want it to be filled with sprout salads and kamut scones!” Instead, Jason designed recipes that appeal to the mainstream, while still being super healthy. All 154 recipes are vegan, half of those are raw, many of them are gluten free, sugar free, superfood infused… But if you think healthy has to be boring, you’re wrong. From pasta to pizza to burgers and pies, and even ice cream floats, this book is packed with luscious, indulgent, health giving food.  “Can we lead a more engaged, sensual, present life through the food choices that we make?” Absolutely! The intention behind Eaternity is to help people love themselves more.“The crux of this book is love.”

Discover Jason’s exercise past (not as virtuous as you might think!), the secrets to getting the best night’s sleep, and (Allison’s favorite) how to eat to fight stress. Find out about Jason’s raw diet experience and where he finds his inspiration for his culinary creations. Featuring desert island foods, the best recipe for a first date, secrets to longevity AND a karaoke duet, this episode is packed with fun and not to be missed.

Jason Wrobel’s Bio

Jason Wrobel is a world-renowned leader in organic raw vegan cuisine, culinary education and epicurean entertainment.  With a focus on radical simplicity and artful presentation, he imbues his ecstatic raw food creations with the energy of fresh, local, organic produce and the healing properties of raw superfoods, which have rendered his dishes hands-down favorites among celebrity clients, and regular folk alike. J-Wro fans Woody Harrelson, Jeremy Piven, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, John C. Reilly, Steve Buscemi, Isabelle Adjani, Oren Moverman and Russell Simmons, consistently (and effusively) rave about his healthy, innovative and delicious plant-based creations.

After graduating from the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute, and earning national certification as a Raw Food Chef and Instructor, Jason went onto to apprentice the industry’s finest and most revered talents, including Matthew Kenney, Cherie Soria, Elaina Love, Jennifer Cornbleet, Melissa Davison, Angela Kasmala-Newsom, Tiziana Alipo Tamborra and Cosmo Meens.  Honing his culinary skills at organic establishments such as The Karmic Café in Detroit, Michigan and Jivamuktea Café at the Jivamukti Yoga Center in New York City, gave Jason the opportunity to offer his unique culinary creations at posh dinner parties and intimate celebrations, as well as at the world-famous Raw Spirit Festival. As the Head Raw Food Chef at the award-winning Café La Vie in Santa Cruz, California, Jason highlighted the amazing local produce from Northern California’s central coast, taking innovative simplicity to soaring new heights while challenging palates and generating gustatory bliss.

As a live speaker known for his empowering, passionate and comedic delivery, he has shared the stage with wellness luminaries and bestselling authors such as John Robbins, David Wolfe, Kevin Trudeau, Donna Gates, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Ron Teeguarden and Kathy Freston.  He has presented raw vegan food to tens of thousands of eager audience members, including appearances at David Wolfe’s The Longevity Now Conference, The Take Back Your Health Conference, Natural Products Expo West, Organic Avenue, Lightning in a Bottle, BhaktiFest, The Raw Dolphins Retreat and The Raw Spirit Festival.

Jason is also the host of the first longevity cooking show on television, How to Live to 100, which debuted on The Cooking Channel in 2013. His first DVD, Simple Vegan Classics, is an international bestseller, which has taught thousands of people the world over how to prepare easy and nutritious raw vegan foods. He is also the host of the popular YouTube channel The J-Wro Show®, showcasing healthy recipes, lifestyle transformation tips and culinary comedy.

Jason’s diet tips for better sex:

There are many ingredients that can boost your mojo and get you ready for lovin’. Some of Jason’s favorites are kombucha squash, pine pollen, maca powder, raw chocolate, pumpkin seeds… Foods high in magnesium are excellent for giving you a little va va voom in the bedroom department. Preparing food with your partner is also a sensual experience.

Jason’s diet tips for weight loss:

Juicing and eating raw food are a brilliant way to detox and lose weight. However, it isn’t just what we eat, but how we eat that matters. The standard three big meals a day can be detrimental to health. Jason advocates eating foods as raw as possible and as water dense as possible, and eating smaller, more nutrient dense portions throughout the day.

Jason’s diet tips for stress relief:

Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi, is fantastic for keeping you chilled. Starches and complex carbohydrates from foods like quinoa, millet and sprouted brown rice are also great for reducing stress.

“I’m slimmer than I’ve ever been in my life, but I get to eat as much as I want, whenever I want.” Chef AJ has been a vegan for 40 years, but she wasn’t always this healthy. Despite her vegan diet, she weighed 200 pounds and was in the first stages of colon cancer. “My husband used to say I was the only vegan in the world who ate no fruits or vegetables.” She was addicted to her a diet of refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Her wake up call? “I woke up bleeding,” she says and then knew she had to deal with her cravings.

Chef AJ chose to detox at the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego, where they grow their own organic foods and serve up a menu of fresh nourishing plant based goodness. She abstained from all the foods she craved the most, the most addictive: flour, alcohol and sugar. But food addiction is both physical and psychological, it needs to be tackled from all directions! It isn’t just about diet, you have to move your body, you have to stimulate your mind. Discover how Chef AJ completely changed her life with a combination of wholesome plant based diet, exercise and meditation.

She now teaches others how to make the transition from a diet of processed foods to healthy, healing foods through her website, her YouTube shows and her books. After publishing Unprocessed – How to Achieve Vibrant Health and Your Ideal Weight five years ago, she’s writing The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss, which will be bursting with tasty unprocessed recipes and perfect for people transitioning into vegan foods. Chef AJ is also passionate about helping people overcome food addiction, and she shares some of her best tips with us. Our favorite: don’t try to deprive yourself, instead crowd out the junk foods with wholesome foods, especially vegetables—filling up on smoothies work great!

Did you know most Americans consume on average 800 calories a day from sugar alone? Chef AJ is a spirited advocate for cutting out this nutrient-deficient food from our diets. She is a tornado of facts and figures and this episode is packed with everything from how to overcome food addiction and how to eat a delicious sugar free diet but still indulge in your sweet craving… and you’ll learn how to make fruit ice cream!

Chef AJ’s Bio

Chef AJ has been devoted to a plant-based diet for almost 40 years. She is the host of the television series Healthy Living with CHEF AJ which airs on Foody TV. With her comedy background, she has made appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman and more. A chef, culinary instructor and professional speaker, she is author of the popular book Unprocessed: How to Achieve Vibrant Health and Your Ideal Weight, which chronicles her journey from a junk-food vegan faced with a diagnosis of precancerous polyps, to learning how to create foods that nourish and heal the body.

Based in Los Angeles, Chef AJ teaches a monthly sold-out seminar featuring cooking instruction, nutritional science and song parodies, all delivered with comedic panache. Never content to leave her audience with mere “just do it” advice, she teaches how to create meals to transform their health, how to deal with cravings and food addiction and addresses the emotional side of eating. She is the creator of the Ultimate Weight Loss Program, which has helped hundreds of people achieve the health and the body that they deserve.

Chef AJ was the Executive Pastry Chef at Santé Restaurant in Los Angeles where she was famous for her sugar, oil, salt and gluten free desserts which use the fruit, the whole fruit and nothing but the whole fruit.

Today we spread the podcasting love and play an episode from a podcast entitled Podcasting Mastery (yep, we cross-promote!). We know many of our listeners are budding podcasters, so guys, this one’s for you!

Imagine having the time and money to follow your passion and live life on your own terms – well, that’s what Podcasting Mastery is all about. Hosted by podcast veteran James Martell and digital marketing strategist Kimberly Juchnowski, the podcast helps its followers find ways to create a passive income, so they can spend less time doing business and more time doing the things they truly love.

“If you have a brand, you have a blog, anything that you are an expert on, you start a podcast and your numbers are going to instantly grow, no matter what,” Allison has migrated from the world of documentary and videos to podcasting, with amazing results. She believes you can definitely make your passion profitable.

Allison reveals how to let go of the negative self talk that keeps you doubting and stops you from doing what you love, so that you can be free to pursue your passion. Find out the rituals Suzy and Allison go through before a podcast (you don’t have to be as prepared as you may think!), and the mistakes (or learning experiences, as Allison likes to call them) they overcame. Plus, find out how Allison did at the Podcast Mastery Ten Question challenge!

Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur dipping your toe into podcasting waters, or are just curious how we started the FoodHealsPodcast, you’re going to love this episode!

Thank you Podcasting Mastery for allowing us to replay this interview!

Allison’s FOUR Top Tips for a Successful Podcast

  • Advertising

Advertise your podcast on other podcasts, listeners are hungry for more of what they already love! Instead of looking for sponsors, Allison used Midroll, which acts as the middle man between the podcaster and the advertiser, to advertise the Food Heals Podcast on other shows.

  • Incentives

The Food Heals Podcast offered listeners a chance to win a Swag Bag of amazing health products (obtained for free from sponsors for free advertising) in exchange for a great review. Every podcaster needs to have a strategy to get new subscribers and new reviews. The Swag Bag campaign was hugely successful.

  • Sponsors

Get sponsors before you launch; it creates an instant sense of an established podcast. Allison reached out to companies with values she believed in and offered them free advertising. Now, companies reach out to the Food Heals Podcast — Allison hasn’t had to go out and find an advertiser since the podcast was launched.

  • Community

This is a hugely important part of successful podcasting. Groups like ShePodcasts and Podcasters Paradise offer podcasters a chance to trade reviews, ask questions, and get support and encouragement from peers.

Whenever asked about what she does, the first thing Lisa says is “I’m a mom.” Her top priority is her family’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. She began her blog, Going Green with a Bronner Mom, to give other busy moms quick, easy, honest information about organic and natural products and help them make informed decisions about their and their children’s health. And she’s well placed to do so, as the granddaughter of the founder of a well loved green living brand, Dr. Bronner’s. Lisa’s advice on how to make your life greener is simple: the first step is to educate yourself.

Take the matter into your own hands. Read labels – whether it’s food or a beauty product, see what’s there. Do you recognize the ingredients, or would you need a chemistry degree to make sense of it? Lisa recommends visiting the Environmental Working Group website, which rates products according to safety and has a breakdown of ingredients including their potential effects. But you don’t need to read the label if you’re buying a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s soap, which contains only natural skin loving ingredients, and can be used for all kinds of cleaning tasks.

The story of how Dr Bronner’s was founded could be made into a film – Emanuel Bronner grew up in a German soap making family in early 1900’s. His philosophy, or Moral ABC, which focused around world peace, environment protection and the belief we are all one, caused his family to shun him, and compelled him to emigrate to the USA. There, he was wrongfully imprisoned in a mental institution for making impassioned speeches where he sought to promote the idea of an environmentally conscious, peaceful world. But he escaped and set up the Dr. Bronner’s that has now become a household name. His philosophy for this better world can still be found today, written on the soap bottle labels.

Dr. Bronner was a true visionary and his passion for creating a more ethical world lives on through the “Fighting Soap Company,” as the family have lovingly nicknamed it. “It’s part company and part activism,” says Lisa, referring to the campaigns Dr. Bronner’s has fought over the years. Where her grandfather’s causes were fluoridation and world peace, now the company is active in raising awareness and creating positive change in the areas of GMO labelling, fairer trade and business practices, animal welfare and living wage reform. Click here to find out how Dr. Bronner’s is making life better for both communities and the environment in Sri Lanka and Guana. We wish there were more companies like this! Dr. Bronner’s story proves that you can do business well while being fair, ethical and responsible.

We will be covering the Take Back Your Health Conference in North Hollywood, from 9 th to 11 th April, which is all about empowering individuals and consumers with the information to make better health choices. Lisa also be there, giving talks about how to Green Your Routine, and how Dr. Bronner’s came to be. Do you want to win tickets to the conference? Tune into Episode 71 to find out how!

Lisa Bronner’s Bio

Lisa Bronner – stay at home mom to three growing kids; sister, wife, and daughter to those who run Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps; and granddaughter to the founder Dr. Emanuel Bronner himself.  A key motivation for her is the word “stewardship”.  This is the idea that certain things have been entrusted to her that it is her job to maintain and nurture –her health, her family’s health, our emotional and mental well being, her home, her time, her finances, the earth, the air, the water.  With blessings come responsibilities, and she wants all these things to be better off for having been – partially or wholly – in her care.

Lisa’s Must-Avoid ingredients:

  • Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES): very common in body washes and shampoos, it dries and strips the skin of its natural oils. More worryingly, the process of making SLS, ethoxylation, produces a carcinogenic by-product called 1,4-Dioxane. A huge number of products, including “green” products, were found to contain this carcinogen. Watch out for SLS in your products and avoid whenever possible!

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): although it hasn’t gone through the process of ethoxylation and therefore has not been contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane, it is still very drying and irritating to the skin. It is often found in toothpastes, and has been linked to mouth cankers.

  • Fragrance or perfume: these terms aren’t regulated, and can therefore cover anything. “Fragrance” can be a combination of up to 3,000 different ingredients, many of which are known allergens.

We were delighted to interview Dr. Angela DeBord Henriksen on our show today. As a board-certified physician, Angela practices traditional medicine, but she’s recently changed her focus to discovering the root causes of disease and empowering her patients to change their health for the better through their diet.

Angela is passionate about food and how natural foods can restore perfect health and heal disease, and excited about branching out into more holistic healthcare. However, she wasn’t always aware of this alternative approach to healing. “I felt like I was a really good doctor,” says Angela, “but I probably just wasn’t complete at that point.”

The turning point came when a patient who’d been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus, came to Angela in distress. She was on a cocktail of medications to manage her symptoms, suffering many side effects, feeling depressed, tired, sick, unsexy and at her wits’ end. A second opinion quickly put the original diagnosis under scrutiny and they discovered that what they’d thought was an autoimmune disease was in fact an allergy to red dye. Within six months of cutting it out of her diet and eating more healthily, she was off all her medicines. That was a wake up call for Angela. She knew she had to think differently about medicine, and dived into researching holistic health.

But it isn’t always easy to convince her patients of the benefits of eating healthier food. “A lot of people aren’t really open to thinking about changing their diet.” Getting people to start considering their lifestyle has been a slow journey for Angela, but she carries on undaunted, showing clips of “Forks over Knives” to her patients. “Some of them are starting to come around.”

Through her own struggles with shifting her diet, Angela understands how much of a challenge it can be to make those changes. She focuses on raising awareness of the additives and nasty ingredients contained in processed foods, and their effects on health, while helping patients to make healthier choices, one small step at the time.

Angela shares her best tips for growing your knowledge of food, alternative medicine and holistic healing. She also advocates going to your doctor armed with questions, and gives us a list of the most appropriate ones so you can get a clearer picture from your medical practitioner. Finally, we answer a question from one of our listeners about healing Irritable Bowel Syndrome naturally. Tune in for all this, and more!

Magda Freedom Rod is one of our favorite people and we were ecstatic to have her back on the show. Magda is a lifestyle guide who focuses on holistic wellness, helping people to activate their highest potential through yoga, meditation and conscious eating. She offers sustainable living advice to empower her clients to lead a healthier, happier, more fulfilled life. With Summer just around the corner, it’s time to press that reset button.

Spring equinox, the first day of spring, symbolizes a new season and a fresh start: you come out of the darkness, into the light. And it also happens to be Magda’s birthday! It’s an exciting and energetic time of year, a time to review your New Year’s resolutions and see if they need reaffirming or changing. This is also the perfect moment to set new intentions.

But how do we stick to them? “Discipline,” says Magda. You must give your attention to the things you want to do and be. If you want to change, you need to be inspired. Magda’s tip for great inspiration (which we of course wholeheartedly agree with) is “Listen to the Food Heals Podcast!”. You heard it from the expert!

Spring cleaning isn’t just for houses, and Magda has a simple tip for spring cleaning the body: more plants, less animals. She also advocates greens, greens and more greens for cleansing and detoxing the body temple. “Dropping animal products from your diet can completely transform your life and your body.” Magda focuses on the crowding out approach – by adding more of the good stuff, the bad stuff naturally just falls away.

Our cells are constantly evolving, changing, growing and renewing so that every seven years we have a completely new body. Magda strongly advocates conscious eating, becoming aware of the food choices we make and how they impact not just our body but every sentient being we share the planet with, as well as the planet herself.
