In the first part of this information packed episode, we answer a business related question from one of our listeners. Sheria wanted to know our thoughts on turning a passion into a career, and starting a podcast based around animal welfare. We couldn’t be more supportive, being animal lovers ourselves, and share our best entrepreneurial tips. We’re planning a training program to teach you how to market and monetize your podcasts — look out for this in the future!

Someone who has already turned her passion into her career is our guest, founder of BEETxBEET, DJ and vegan, Jacky Wasserman. Jacky became a vegan four years ago after watching Forks for Knives and Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, two films we highly recommend!!  After finding out the truth about factory farming, she knew she couldn’t contribute to that industry anymore.

A graphic designer by trade, Jacky started up her business after she failed to find fashionable vegan clothing for herself.  Her clothing aims to raise awareness about important topics that need a voice. Fast fashion is the second most polluting industry, and Jacky wants BEETxBEET to be different.  With slogans like, “It’s not you, it’s meat,” & “Hell No GMO”  She incorporates her ethical values into her work; BEETxBEET clothing will soon be 100% organic and sustainably made.  There’s a lot going on in this episode, with topics ranging from sustainable shopping to alkaline water.  Jacky’s inspiring story reminds us of the importance of following your passion in life, and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

Jacky Wasserman’s Bio

Founder Jacky Wasserman is a graphic designer, vegan and DJ living in Los Angeles. No stranger to fun, she came up with BEETxBEET as a playful way to bring together her life’s passions: design, food and music.  All it takes is one step at a time to make a difference and we can do it together.

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Megan was shocked when she found out Subway put chemicals in their bread. This scary news story sparked her research into the food industry and she soon discovered that most of the foods she’d eaten throughout her life were loaded with toxic chemicals and additives. “I used to think I was eating healthy!” she exclaimed. After a 40 day challenge where she ate no processed food, she felt too good to go back to her old eating habits. She went from depressed and lethargic, to happier and more energetic. Watching the movie Forks over Knives further encouraged her into a vegan lifestyle.

This sparked a career change; Megan studied to become a Holistic Nutritionist and started the blog megunprocessed.com, which aims to help people eliminate processed foods and start their own journey towards a healthier plant-based diet. Her recipes are quick, wholesome, easy to make and, most importantly, delicious! The mere mention of cheesy cauli-tots had our mouths watering! Megan’s producing background also has a part to play in her new career. Through her company Unprocessed Productions, she helps health and wellness bloggers make videos to spread the word on organic plant-based goodness.

This episode is packed full of tips, laughter and healthy recipes. She shares with us some great advice on how to get off unprocessed foods, her brave decision to stop taking the birth control pill, smoothies vs juices, and so much more!

Megan Lawson’s Bio

In addition to her blog, she runs her own production company, UnProcessed Productions, where she produces entertaining and informative videos for food brands, bloggers, hosts, chefs, YouTube and TV personalities.

We kick off with a music related question from one of our FoodHealsPodcast listeners. Is it possible that a piece of music can open up intuition? In our opinion, it absolutely can. Music is a powerful tool that can instantly change your mood, your aura and your chakras. We give our selected listener some spiritual and entrepreneurial tips on following her dreams! It’s the perfect way to introduce our guest for this episode, composer, violinist and vegan Chrysanthe Tan, just back in LA after being on tour after releasing her debut album Stories.

Chrysanthe started playing the piano when she was 7, and the violin from the tender age of eight.  There was some indecision over her going into music, with both her parents preferring more traditional careers. However, for Chrysanthe music is more than just sound, it’s a language, a way of conveying who she is — “Without music, I don’t even think I would be able to communicate,” she says.

Chrysanthe stopped eating meat when she was a child and was an ovo-lacto vegetarian until she went to college. Her first forays into veganism were uninformed, but she quickly discovered and embraced whole foods and vegetables, and started reaping the health benefits. One of the most noticeable changes has been that she no longer suffers from allergies, something that had plagued her since childhood. Being from a Greek background, Chrysanthe’s family found it initially difficult to deal with her veganism, but after watching the movie Forks over Knives, her mum undertook a 30 day vegan challenge and has been vegan ever since!

Being vegan when on tour can be a challenge, but Chrysanthe has devised a survival technique. “I scavenge and assemble”, she says, and isn’t embarrassed to produce a sweet potato from her bag to supplement a restaurant salad. Keep an eye on Chrysanthe’s website for her upcoming ebook on veganism. For now, she shares with us her four great tips for eating a cheap vegan diet on the road:

1 – Identify your resources: have you got a fridge in your hotel room? Are there facilities to boil water?

2 – The grocery store is your friend, a more sustainable and cheaper option than the restaurant.

3 – Focus on foods that will give you energy — beans potatoes, oats, rice.

4 – Embrace your inner scavenger! If there’s a bowl of fruit in the hotel foyer, grab that free apple!

Chrysanthe also shares with us her best secret tip, but you’ll have to listen to the episode to  find out what it is! Tune in for vegan tips, musical musings and tasters of Chrysanthe’s new album.

Chrysanthe Tan Bio

Chrysanthe Tan is a composer, violinist, and writer who primarily lives in the realm of contemporary classical chamber music. Throughout most of 2015, she toured the world as pop star Ariana Grande’s violinist on the Honeymoon Tour, playing in arenas across North America, Europe, and Asia. In July, she released her debut album, Stories, comprised of chamber music for piano, strings, and electronics, then performed the work in its entirety with fellow tour mates at an intimate album release concert in Los Angeles.

This year, Chrysanthe also had the pleasure of participating as an ASCAP composer in the Lyric Project, scoring the Project Involve short film “Vamonos,” which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in May, and composing music for the experimental feature film Mono, set to premiere at an exhibition in Antwerp in January 2016. In December, Chrysanthe launched a Patreon channel as a new means for her to share more compositional and experimental work and better connect with the people supporting the diversity of her art-making.

Aside from composing and touring, Chrysanthe is active in the contemporary classical performance scene as a soloist, collaborator, and one half of the violin+guitar duo Duo Meranti, a Balkan/folk/contemporary classical project with composer/guitarist Sean Hayward.

In addition to her credits with Ariana Grande, Chrysanthe has an extensive television resume (Glee, 1600 Penn, America’s Next Top Model, American Music Awards, etc) and has performed, toured, and recorded with numerous artists including Bastille, Paul Anka, Alicia Keys, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Nicki Minaj, Skylar Grey, Jennifer Hudson, Marc Anthony, Marco Antonio Solís, Cheyenne, Justin Bieber, David Foster, ZZ Ward, Frank Ocean, Dumbfoundead, and Hélène Segara.

As a writer, Chrysanthe has written a full-length poetry thesis manuscript (Surveillance Notes), a chapbook (Songs), been published in literary outlets like The Volta 365, DUM DUM Zine, and Selfish Magazine, and is currently writing an e-book on traveling plant-based on a budget. She is a graduate of Stanford University (Creative Writing and Music), California Institute of the Arts (MFA in Creative Writing), and is currently pursuing a second MFA (in Violin Performance at CalArts.

Take an hour out of your busy schedule and listen to our interview with Master Intuitive and psychic Tracy Crossley.  Her unique blend of neuro-psychology, reiki and spirituality make her the go-to person if you’re feeling stuck within yourself, and we were extremely excited to have her on the show.

Tracy started coaching 8 years ago, when she became a Love Coach. Having gone through challenging and dysfunctional relationships, she knows the importance of being true to yourself, and changing the damaging patterns of deep seated negative beliefs.  Tracy specializes in helping clients reclaim their power by gaining confidence and finding out who they truly are and what they really want from life.  She encourages clients to get out of their heads and focus on their deep intuitions instead.  By enabling them to identify on a deeper level with their core beliefs, they can then eliminate those beliefs and learn how to self love.

Tracy gives it to us straight, with lots of love and laughter, and we were both in total awe of her psychic credentials.  If you’ve ever wondered how to develop your own intuition, you don’t want to miss this episode.  We discuss reincarnation, taro readings, energetic deep cleaning, magical story re-writing, soulmates and soul-groups in this fun packed and spiritually uplifting episode.

Tracy Crossley’s Bio

Tracy Crossley is a Master Intuitive based in LA County where she conducts sessions in person, over the phone and through Skype. Her blend of intuition, business acumen, psychology, Reiki, spirituality and subconscious pattern breaking helps people identify their real obstacles and connect emotionally. Her straightforward approach has attracted CEOs, people in work/life transition and other Type A individuals who think intellectualizing problems is the key to solving them (Hint: it isn’t).  Tracy studied neuropsychology and received her BA from Charter Oak State College. She is a Reiki Master and blogger for publications such as Huffington Post and elephant journal.  She is an empathic; clairvoyant, clairaudient and clairsentient, in other words…She really utilize her sixth sense.

In addition, her  mentoring work has run the realm in counseling many folks who have struggled in and out of relationships.  The road that lead to becoming a coach/mentor didn’t seem to be on her agenda. Clearly, the Universe had other ideas, and through a series of synchronistic events she trained to become a love coach almost seven years ago. It was an area she struggled most of her life (WHAT WAS LOVE?) from self-loathing as a young girl to not being seen in relationships as she truly was–her trail was strewn with a lot of people pleasing and appearing perfect. As a born intuitive, She always knew things she was the go-to person for advice. It’s funny, for years she had such a fear of getting a reading or anything from another psychic. Over 20 years ago, she had her first reading…only to be told by nearly every psychic that they wanted her to read them instead!  Has she got stories! She has taught classes in meditation, Tarot, vision-boarding, among all the other mentoring workshops.    She  always gives it straight but with a lot of love (and some laughter)!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This episode is like the tree of life – we branched out in all different directions and covered so many fascinating and inspiring topics! Our guest was author and Transformational CEO Evita Ramparte, who shared with us her jaw-dropping success story.

You wouldn’t think it to look at Evita today, but a mere ten years ago she was overweight, sick, tired, depressed, and suffering from bad skin, chronic headaches, and hypoglycemia. In 2000, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She made the incredibly courageous decision not to go to hospital and instead heal herself through detoxing, fasting and cleansing her body and her mind — “Toxic food and toxic thinking caused my cancer, and I’m going to quit both,” she told her doctors before walking out on them. After four months, she was free from cancer, felt amazing, and had lost 50 pounds! Cleansing gave Evita the courage the start living her life the way she really wanted to. She’s written three books and stars in the films Hungry for Change and Food Heals. Her incredible story is an inspiration to many.

Evita now helps people around the world reset their relationship with themselves, through her transformational cleanse program Viva La Cleanse. The mind and body detox consists of cleanses and “eat simple” challenges, which encourage the body to crave nutrient-rich natural foods, whilst improving health, fitness, mental clarity and wellness. Evita also advocates fasting as a sure way to awaken intuition and your inner leader.

Evita shares her thoughts on raw foods, coffee enemas, spirituality and healing, and discusses the links between emotional baggage and physical issues. There’s a lot packed into this episode, so sit back, relax and be inspired!

She lost over 50 pounds in just few months and turned her life around by a high-carb raw vegan lifestyle. After four months she was considered cancer free.

Evita began a life journey, which led her through Paris, London, Los Angeles to Hawaii. Today, she lives in California, and her story inspires people all over the world.

About Us:

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

This week, we play an episode of JJ Flizanes’s podcast Fit2Love, where JJ interviews our very own Allison on the fascinating topic of Juice Cleansing. After witnessing her parents’ long suffering battle with cancer, and losing them both despite the multitude of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed, Allison knew she had to dedicate her life to a better way of healing, and this is where juicing comes in. During this episode, Allison talks about juice cleanse retreats, how juicing can help detoxify and heal the body, and shares the secrets of her 5-day cleanse.

In a world that’s bombarding our bodies with toxins, from the air we breathe, the water we drink and the foods we eat, it’s vital that we find a way to nourish ourselves and protect our cells from damage. Juicing offers condensed nutrition that helps the body to eliminate the toxins and free radicals that build up over time, allowing it to regenerate and heal. Detoxing is far from just a trendy fad — in fact it’s been practiced for thousands of years, and was even endorsed by the Greek physician Hippocrates!

Referring to juicing as a spiritual cleanse, as well as a physical one, Alison and JJ explore the mechanics behind juicing’s powerful healing properties and the potential benefits it offers to those suffering from cancer. If you’re not a fan of juicing yet, you certainly will be after listening to this inspiring podcast!

J.J. Flizanes’ Bio
JJ Flizanes is an Empowerment Strategist. She is the Director of Invisible Fitness, an Amazon best-selling author of Fit 2 Love: How to Get Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually Fit to Attract the Love of Your Life, and author of Knack Absolute Abs: Routines for a Fit and Firm Core, and was named Best Personal Trainer in Los Angeles for 2007 by Elite Traveler Magazine.  JJ vividly reminds us that the word ‘fitness’ is not just about the state of one’s physical body, but also the factors which determine a person’s overall well being. And, for JJ, the key components in all these areas are ‘invisible’ — balanced support structures of nutrition, emotional centeredness and health. A video expert for About.com and regular contributor for The Daily Love, JJ has been featured in many national magazines such as Shape, Fitness, Muscle and Fitness HERS, Elegant Bride, and Women’s Health as well as appeared on NBC, CBS, Fox 11 and KTLA. For her clients & followers, JJ designs customized coaching programs and unique, versatile approaches that harmonize the emotional, the mental and the spiritual.

Allison Melody’s Bio
Allison Melody is a dog-loving eco-entrepreneur with a passion for film, fitness and food!  She is the host of the podcast, The Food Heals Podcast, the director of the film, Food Heals, and owner of Melody Productions, a video production company.  And of course, Allison is Owner and Developer of Holistic Voice. Holistic Voice was formed when, at the age of 26, Allison endured the devastating loss of both her parents to cancer  after long and challenging battles. Witnessing her mother and father suffer so intensely and needlessly from a cure that brought more pain than the disease, Allison soon dedicated her life to finding a better way to heal. She watched in disbelief as doctors prescribed drug after drug, observed her parents’ hair fall out, their rapidly aging faces, and their exceedingly diminishing vitality. The tragedy instilled in her an unwavering passion for nutritional medicine, and propelled her into the world of holistic health and alternative healing.  Allison’s firm commitment to natural health is further evidenced by her achievement of a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology.

Tune in for part 2 of our 2-part episode with actor, NBA star and vegan activist John Salley, where we discuss his thoughts on milk, the Paleo diet and politics, and his new documentary “The Missing Peace”. We also tease out some of John’s favorite things.“Not my mother, not my milk” — John is a strong advocate against drinking cow’s milk, and you may well decide to avoid it when you hear his convincing arguments! His views on the paleo diet are equally powerful. “We were farmers”, he says, “not hunter-gatherers… They think the Flintstones is real!” Don’t miss his recommendation for a new vegan cheese that has even the most dedicated pizza lovers fooled.

John’s consciousness stems from his becoming a vegan, and he lives his life by that choice, from the foods he chooses to eat and the products he uses. He compares his body to a 1964 Mustang, saying “Keep it sexy” — there’s no reason to let the body become inflamed and diseased. John’s body is his universe and he takes excellent care of it through a super healthy diet.  This episode is filled to the brim with fascinating topics; John blew our minds with his views on the pharmaceutical industry, politics and propaganda. He also shares with us some of his favorite things, from toothpaste to cooking oil, teammates and movies, not to mention the surprising secret to his dog’s longevity!

John Salley’s
Bio

Most can achieve a goal and be pleasantly satisfied with their results but to continually create new tasks to accomplish and to reinvent yourself is the mark of a versatile and motivated individual.  It is the definition of father, athlete, actor, entrepreneur, talk show host, philanthropist, wellness advocate, vegan and champion: John Salley.  A proud native of Brooklyn, New York, John found a love for basketball at an early age.  He accepted a Basketball Scholarship to Georgia Tech to play for legendary head coach Bobby Cremins. From there Salley went on to become a 15-year NBA veteran and was the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams.  During the 80’s, Salley was a member of the Detroit Piston “Bad Boys” squad.  Salley went on to Chicago playing with Michael Jordan as part of the Bulls 1996 championship team.  In 1999, Phil Jackson invited Salley to come to Los Angeles to provide experience and leadership to the 1999-2000 Lakers’ championship team.

After his retirement from the NBA in 2000, Salley explored several opportunities in both television and film.  John’s film credits include Bad Boys 1 & 2, Eddie and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Confession of a Shopaholic. John has served as host for numerous award shows and was also the host of The John Salley Block Party on 100.3 The Beat Morning Show in Los Angeles.  John recently hosted the Reunion Shows of VH-1’s #1 rated show, Basketball Wives.

John spent 7 years serving as the co-host of the Emmy nominated, critically acclaimed “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” on Fox Sports Net.  He was also the host of the sports talk show “Ballers” on BET.  John is also the head of his own production company, John Salley Presents, Inc., where John uses his uncanny ability to find unique and interesting people and projects for television, film and Internet. In April 2011 until recently, John hosted his own talk show Game On! airing on The Reelz Channel. In addition, John was also a co-host on The Car Show, which aired on Speed Channel.

“This one looks and smells different.  You’ve gotta have a smell.  Smell that,” John Salley says, extending two different tomatoes to me, one organic, and the other farmed with pesticides. The difference is unmistakable.  The organic produce smells rich and earthy while the other one smells like nothing at all.

Shopping at Whole Foods with NBA star John Salley

The six foot eleven inch tall former Detroit Piston, and vegan, is giving me a tour of his local Whole Foods Market in Tarzana, California, and showing me how he shops for his family, including his wife and his children “who are growing like wildebeests.”

I wore my absolute highest heels to meet with the actor and NBA star, but he still towered over me.  John has quite a commanding presence, but as we toured the aisles of Whole Foods, I realized how down to earth he really was, even though I had to crane my neck to make eye contact with him.

John Salley takes Allison Melody shopping at Whole Foods.

Shopping at Whole Foods with NBA star John Salley

John Salley’s saga is pretty incredible. He spent 15 years in the NBA and became the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams, which he says can be attributed to his healthy diet. He is also well-known for his 7 years co-hosting the Emmy nominated show, “The Best Damn Sports Show Period,” as well as acting in numerous films and TV shows.

John is hardly the mental image most people have when they hear the word “vegan,” but he chose to adopt a plant-based diet many years ago as a result of the health issues he was having.  “A vegan diet changed my life,” the former Detroit Piston and Chicago Bull says.  At a young age, John had been suffering from a compacted colon and high cholesterol.  After his doctor told him his eating habits were killing him, John chose to forgo their cholesterol lowering medications and instead adopted a plant-based diet. This life changing decision was all it took to completely transform his body, heal his colon, lower his cholesterol and allow him to have a highly successful career.

“My message I want everybody to know is: Eat a plant-based diet, or don’t. A plant-based diet keeps you alive, the other diet keeps you in the hospital.”  Salley saw first hand the impact of a poor diet after he lost his father to cancer.  It was something I learned we both had in common.  This close and painful loss had motivated us both to reevaluate and overhaul our diets.  “I didnt want to see anybody else go through that,” says Salley.

In addition to changing his own lifestyle, Salley has used his visibility to increase awareness about the advantages of a plant-based diet.  In 2009 and 2010, he spoke to Congress about the Child Nutrition Act, asking members to support legislation that would increase vegetarian options in meals served in public schools.

Even though his standards of nutrition may seems rigid, John doesn’t take any of it too seriously. He even enjoys an occasional glass of wine from The Vegan Vine, the vegan winery he has partnered with.  He also loves to laugh and make jokes.  “You know how smart Bugs Bunny was,” he remarks persuasively as he lifts up some organic carrots. And then it’s on to the greens, “Celery- great for your breath.  Hint, everyone!”

You can see the full shopping trip in the upcoming documentary, Food Heals! Until then check out latest our podcast episode with John!

John joins Allison and Suzy in West Hollywood to discuss the sexual and spiritual benefits of the vegan lifestyle on this episode of the The Food Heals Podcast.

Things get a little “dirty” with John in Part 1 of this 2-part episode. Suffering from high cholesterol and a compacted colon, John shares how he healed his body through a vegan diet and colonics so he could continue to play basketball. Get ready to laugh with us as we cover sex, spirituality, and green tea!
