81: Chris Guillebeau on Living by Your Own Rules

04/12/2016

Chris Guillebeau became an entrepreneur when he was just 19 years old. After trying a series of conventional jobs, he realized he had to do something else. “I was a terrible employee, I didn’t want to work for anybody else,” says Chris. He wanted to create freedom and independence for himself, and now dedicates his life to the worthwhile combination of highly personal goals and service to others.

Chris got bitten by the travel bug while he was an aid worker. He set up his first blog, The Art of Nonconformity in 2008 to chronicle his journey around the world and share his experiences. The blog also teaches people how to travel-hack and empowers readers with tools and research to help them make the jump to a way of life that’s more aligned with their values. Chris’s philosophy centers around living an authentic life: “You don’t have to live your life the way other people expect.” What kind of life do you want to experience?

We know many of our listeners are keen to start their own businesses, but there can be a lot of fear involved in that decision – for Chris, the key is motivation. “Follow your passion and the money will follow.” He encourages budding entrepreneurs not to let fear make the decisions. Instead, base your choices around three key principles: Joy (what you like to do), money (something that’s financially viable) and flow (something that uses your unique skills.)

Chris’s new book Born for This: How to Find the Work You Are Meant to Do centers around those three key components and is the culmination of years of research on people who have found or created their dream job. Chris will be on a 30-city tour to promote the book, check out www.bornforthisbook.com for details. If you go, make sure you say hi to Chris from Food Heals Nation!

For budding entrepreneurs, Chris has one key recommendation: make sure your message and your mission are clear. You can figure out the logistics later – social media won’t matter if you have nothing to say. “Your message should be one of empowerment and change.” Find your tribe, that group of people who is as passionate about your topic as you are.

Tune in and find out how Chris visited every country in the world before he turned 35, how he funded his trip and how he grew his online business into a success! And of course, tips to start living the life of your dreams!
