Let’s face it, 98% of diets fail. Why? Mindset and misinformation. Diets are short term fixes based on restriction. But while we’re afraid of calories, not getting enough actually does more harm than good in the long term—so much so that today’s guest, Alexa Schirm, would rather people be overfed on the right foods than underfed on anything. But nutrition is only one part of the bigger picture that makes up perfect health. It’s also about mindset, accepting who you are, and going for your dreams.

Alexa Schirm is the force behind Simple Roots Wellness, a website dedicated to helping you find a healthy balance. With a BA in Nutrition and Masters in Health Studies, Alexa is passionate about simplifying complex matters and giving you the raw, unedited, simple truth about health and what the body needs to thrive. She’s also a fellow podcaster with her show Simple Roots Radio, where she interviews experts and everyday people on health and wellness strategies.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • Why whole foods are best
  • How to restore metabolic function and manage hormones
  • The hormonal effects triggered by artificial sweeteners
  • How fake sugar makes you hungrier
  • What your fat cells are made of
  • Why calorie deficits do more harm than good
  • The one thing most people miss when they decide to get healthy
  • How to give up sugar without feeling like you’re giving anything up
  • How to emotionally connect with your goals

Cramps, acne, bloating. Irritability, anger, moodiness. You know what I’m talking about – most of us suffer from a combination of these, and a host of other symptoms, every month. At just 35, Rich suffered a host of health issues – food intolerances, low libido, weight gain, complete exhaustion, candida overgrowth. The search for a solution lead him to study functional diagnostic nutrition—four years on, he is symptom-free.

Rich is now a functional medicine practitioner whose mission is to put his health detective skills to the test and find the root cause of your symptoms. Functional medicine takes a holistic approach, looking at both the physical body and what is going on in your life, your past, your feelings.

It’s Halloween and everyone is talking about timelines and parallel universes. Is it Sex in the City, or Sex and the city? Did Darth Vader really say “Luke, I am your father”? or was it “No, I am your father”? Well, it turns out in our current reality, it’s “AND”, and “NO.” And Curious George doesn’t have a tail… but millions are adamant he had.

According to the Mandela Effect theory, this is due to us jumping time streams into a parallel universe, different to the one we were in when we were young. Or could it be that hackers have traveled back in time and tweaked things? After all, according to Quantum physics, time travel is absolutely possible. But then why do so many of us share the same memories? Like the famous line in Forest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates”…. Turns out, it’s actually “life WAS like a box of chocolates”.

Is it just collective memory? Have we jumped timelines? Have hackers gone back in time and changed aspects of popular culture to mess with our minds? Could it be aliens? Are we in a parallel universe? We dive into all these paranormal topics in our Halloween Special.

Have a happy and healthy Halloween Food Heals Nation!

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Our guest today is Elana Lavine, an LA native who ditched her advertising career to dive into eco-entrepreneurship with her amazing website klean-slate.com. Elana grew up eating a standard American diet, which caused her to suffer from acid reflux at just 16 years old! She was put on medication, the side effects of which she is still dealing with today. This is why she’s now determined to raise awareness of healthy living and natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. Elana’s lightbulb moment was sparked during an intense and unconventional yoga retreat in Mexico—suddenly everything shifted.

Elana has gone from enjoying late night pizza and early morning vitamin water to feeling comfortable going into a non-vegan restaurant and adapting the menu to suit her plant-based needs. But it’s not about being perfect. It’s ok to have chips from time to time! Rather, it’s about finding your own path to self-healing, and healing the planet.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • How a yoga retreat changed Elana’s life, and saved her both physically and emotionally.
  • Why Elana is an advocate of digestive enzymes.
  • Health tips for the super busy.
  • The importance of replenishing your gut microflora
  • Why texture is your best friend when it comes to creating delicious healthy meals
  • Why minerals are vital for your body
  • What dairy and sugar do to the body
  • When to broach the topic of veganism, and when to stay quiet
  • How to make Elana’s No Guilt No Shame Chocolate Smoothie
  • All the gossip from The Food Heals Anniversary Party!!

Elena Wilkins loves women, and is passionate about empowering them and helping them take control of their body. She specializes in hormones and female health and has spent the last 9 years extensively studying health and nutrition. Through her podcast and health coaching website, she helps women navigate the world of whole foods plant-based dieting, reverse disease, balance hormones and restore wellbeing.

Working full time, studying full time and being a full-time caregiver stressed Elena’s body and depleted its nutrient stores. Going on the pill caused a host of other health problems, like low libido, hypothyroidism, and unbalanced hormones. But Elena was determined to heal herself naturally. She scorned the prescription drugs in favor of a natural approach, and it worked. She healed her hypothyroidism within a year, without the use of medication. Even though the journey to health was long and difficult, Elena is grateful for the experience, which now enables her to help other women overcome disease and get healthy. For that reason, she says, it was all worth it.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • How birth control pills block hormonal balance
  • A natural family planning alternative that’s more effective than the pill
  • How to get your partner involved in family planning
  • How Elena reduced her hypothyroid markers in one year, without meds
  • How lack of B12 is linked to infertility
  • Why you CAN re-write your DNA
  • Why the FDA standards are a joke
  • How to get bioavailable B12 and how much you should take
  • What the Daniel Fast is.
  • Why B12 deficiency isn’t a vegan problem, but a human problem.

How many of us can say we have a healthy relationship with food? Eating disorders affect millions of people globally, and this can have major physical and emotional impacts. Our guest today is Jasmine Briones. She suffered from an eating disorder in college, and used raw veganism to hide her issues from her friends and family. It was easy to say she couldn’t eat this or that because it wasn’t raw or vegan. But ironically, while the eating disorder was about trying to control her life, she soon realized she was losing control.

After being confronted by her friends and family, she started properly researching veganism and realized she needed to change her relationship with food and her relationship with herself. Joining an eating disorder recovery group and speaking to other women going through the same thing affected her the most and made her determined to get better.

Now, Jasmine is a healthy vegan, and wants to help others overcome their issues with food and find the self-love that is so necessary for a truly healthy, vibrant, happy life. Her Instagram account has over a hundred thousand followers and she’s the creator behind Sweet Simple Vegan, a website dedicated to helping people understand veganism, free themselves of disordered eating, and live life to the full.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • Suzy’s experience with a subconscious eating disorder.
  • How Suzy overcame her eating disorder.
  • What triggered Jasmine’s eating disorder.
  • How Jasmine started her healing journey.
  • How veganism turned from a tool for eating disorder to a tool for healing.
  • Why Jasmine promotes an oil-free diet.
  • How to discover self-love and stop judging yourself.
  • Why the younger generation is more body-obsessed.

How many of us keep ourselves in the dark when it comes to where our food comes from? We turn the other way because we don’t want to learn about male chicks being tossed into a grinder because they’re not “profitable”, we don’t want to see pigs suffering and immobile in their tiny birthing pens. But thanks to the work of animal activists and organizations like the Humane Society, more and more people are waking up to these practices and opting to go plant-based.

We met Lauren Pitts at the amazing Humane Society Annual Gala, where we bonded over animal welfare, celebrities and all things plant-based!

Lauren always had a passion for animals, but she also ate them. Then three years ago she decided to stop keeping herself in the dark about where her food was coming from. After watching a video by Dr. Melanie Joy, she threw her lunch in the trash, and embarked on a plant-based lifestyle. But she doesn’t stop at her own diet: through her work with the Humane Society, she’s getting plant based meals into schools, universities, and hospitals!

Cows can live to 20 years old, but they will be slaughtered by the time they’re 3. And then we eat them. Yet we can completely survive on plant based foods. For Lauren, the easiest, cheapest, best thing to do for the environment and animals is to reduce your meat consumption. Try a Meatless Monday, or go plant-based a couple of days a week, or be vegan before 6pm – whatever works for you. Just go for it, give it a try – you might surprise yourself.

We’re also joined by surprise guest Kari Jean Glosser, a certified financial planner and adviser who’s recently joined the plant-based movement. She’s 3 months into her plant-based lifestyle and loving it!

Whatever brings you to plant-based – environmental, ethical, animal love, health – every step towards lowering your meat consumption is awesome, that’s how Lauren Pitts sees it.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • Why plant based is actually cheaper than eating meat
  • How much you can save when you go meatless (even just three times a week)
  • How you can go plant-based without the fancy stuff
  • Why protein is the last thing you need to worry about when going plant-based
  • What’s missing in a high-protein diet
  • How to balance supplements with a healthy diet
  • Kari Jean’s aha moment
  • How to train your taste-buds to crave plant-based foods
  • The easiest way to make a low-calorie tasty breakfast shake!

Lauren’s Super Salad:

  • Chickpeas mashed up with a potato masher
  • Celery
  • Green onion
  • Peppers
  • Pickles
  • Just Mayo (plant-based mayo)
  • Mustard
  • Garlic
  • Dill
  • Lemon salt pepper

Mix it all up and DEVOUR!

The minute you tell yourself you can’t have a certain food, you’re going to crave it. And you’ll probably binge on it later. This binging and restricting cycle is one many of us struggle with in our quest for “perfect” health and a “perfect” body. It doesn’t have to be that way!

Tess Challis struggled with a host of health issues in her childhood and through her teens, from fatigue to chronic headaches, acne to anxiety. Refusing to believe this is the way it had to be, Tess decided to change her lifestyle. She went vegan because it was more aligned with her principles, and was amazed at the health benefits she experienced. Her skin cleared up, she had boundless energy, she felt amazing. But after a couple of years, Tess fell into “body perfectionism” mode. Veganism wasn’t enough, she became obsessed about being fat-free, nut-free, soy-free. These became “bad” foods she didn’t allow herself to eat, only to end up binging on them later. She became an obese vegan. And that was the turning point. She realized vilifying foods just wasn’t working. Balance was key, and a new lifestyle was born.

Tess is a chef, author, speaker and wellness coach. She’s passionate about helping others enjoy losing weight with healthy delicious vegan foods. This is not about restriction, but empowerment. Tess’s Be Radiant group helps women feel supported in their weight loss journey. She also offers one to one coaching, focusing on the whole person to provide a tailored weight-loss plan that focuses not on starvation, but on tasty, nutrient-dense food.

What you’ll discover in this episode:

  • Why deprivation is not the key to weight loss
  • Why being a vegan does not cause anemia
  • How Tess increased her iron levels during her pregnancy without pills
  • Tess’s color-coded system for joyful weight-loss
  • Why it’s possible to cleanse AND have cheesecake
  • Tess’s vegan pregnancy
  • Why you should always listen to your inner wisdom
  • How to sprout (it’s easier than you think!) and why it’s healthier
  • The healthiest way to start your day
