Self-improvement – once a women-centric activity, now more and more men are showing up in yoga class, in meditation and in holistic health. Justin Stenstrom is at the forefront of this exciting movement.

Nine years ago, Justin went through a huge transformational period. He freed himself from depression anxiety and panic attacks, and began helping others overcome the same struggle. Elite Man Magazine was born. The website is a collection of advice for men, to help them gain confidence and become true gentlemen. His podcast interviews the best minds from the business, dating, health, fitness and social worlds.

Depression is characterized by regret of the past; anxiety is fear of the future. Either way, you’re not in the present moment. The key to overcoming both these mental conditions is getting back to the now. Justin’s got nine simple steps to help you do just that:

  1. Realize you’re not going crazy. Depression happens to most of us at one time or another.
  2. Use a combination of hypnosis, meditation or yoga (Justin’s favorites are Eckhart Tolle, Paul McKenna and Andrew Dobson)
  3. Live in the present moment.
  4. Exercise, move around
  5. Get enough sleep! We’re typically under-sleeping, but this increases our stress, causes cortisol levels to go through the roof and decreases serotonin.
  6. Improve your diet—good fats, complex carbs, healthy protein—optimize what you’re putting into your body.
  7. Take supplements—one of the best anti-depressant supplements is magnesium.
  8. Socialize! We need human connection to fully thrive.
  9. Find a purpose in life. Whether it’s a hobby, career change or following a passion. Find the thing that makes you jump out of bed every day, and go after it.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why you’re not going crazy if you’re depressed.
  • Justin’s go to strategy for overcoming depression
  • How to self-hypnotize
  • Which book changed Allison’s life?
  • Can you get too much sleep?
  • Why sometimes you need to get sick.
  • Why antibacterial will lead to allergies.
  • How much Vitamin C to take.
  • How to cure eczema.
  • Why plants will help you grow more than milk.
  • The best supplements and natural herbs for depression.
  • Why community and longevity are linked.
  • Justin’s best dating tips.

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Mel Bee became interested in nutrition after she overcame bulimia and depression in her early twenties. When she transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle she realized just how much food can contribute both to disease, and to wellbeing. After a decade of research into detoxing and holistic plant-based nutrition, she’s on a mission to spread the word. Leaving behind her 9 to 5, Mel got into freelance writing and set off traveling in an old VW campervan—with some funny tales to tell! As a detox coach, she helps women step into vibrant health by detoxing their cupboards and their minds from junk foods and junk thoughts.

Speaking of rubbish foods, did you know that over 75% of “edible” products in supermarkets are considered “non-food” items – yep, they’re THAT processed. The situation seems better in Europe, but even there, junk foods and associated diseases like diabetes are on the rise. The dire food situation seems to be matched by the scary political and environmental issues we’re facing.

So how do we deal with it? We send out love. That’s the only energy powerful enough to bring about positive change in the face of so much darkness. We’re not powerless. Each of us can choose to make every decision with love –be it the food we eat, the brands we buy, the way we behave towards others. We can make a difference every day. For Mel, this is how we create a greener, fairer, happier world.

What you’ll learn:

  • When to put food back on the shelf.
  • How the US and Europe differ in terms of food regulations.
  • What happened with Brexit?
  • How stress causes disease.
  • The number one thing that will sabotage a cleanse.
  • How to be plant-based and healthy on the road.
  • Two super simple and delicious salad dressings you can make anywhere (even in a van).
  • Three easy detoxing tips.
  • Why self-love can seem so difficult.

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Our guest today has been an entrepreneur since his early teens. Always a wheeler-dealer, Charlie Fyffe would sell Gatorade and give car rides in high school to make extra money. Having always loved brownies, selling them seemed a natural progression, and Charlies Brownies was born. But seeing that some people couldn’t enjoy the brownies made Charlie want to create a product that was not only delicious, but healthy and ethical as well. Charlie’s Brownies now makes organic, gluten-free, refined-sugar-free, vegan cupcakes (and we tasted them – they will blow you away). Charlie’s even working on a lower GI version for diabetics. And what about “special” brownies? You’ll have to listen to the episode for our take on that!

But Charlie does more than simply make amazing cakes. He also helps to revitalize the health and eating habits of underserved communities. This can be incredibly challenging in communities where there are no health food shop and where the nicest building houses a fast food restaurant. But Charlie is undeterred—there are ways to be plant-based on a budget. Charlie also gives talks about entrepreneurship, to encourage young people to follow their dreams: there is an alternative to the dead-end job option!

Food is everything for Charlie, he loves to teach people how what they eat and what they invest in affects them, their communities, the farmers and the earth. We have a choice every time we eat: we need to invest in food that is renewable, sustainable, and socially responsible. Food that supports the planet and conserves the earth for future generations: Plant-based food.

You can make big changes every day, through the food you choose to buy and eat. And for Charlie, this sustainable way of life can be delicious.

Come and check out Charlie’s Brownies at the LA Vegan Street Fair on 26th March where he’ll be launching three new mystery products!

You can buy Charlie’s Brownies in Yoga Urt in Glendale or if you want to order send Charlie a message.

What you’ll learn:

  • How Charlie transitioned his business to gluten-free and vegan.
  • What helped Charlie stay vegan.
  • The two super ingredients in Charlie’s brownies.
  • The reason Charlie was inspired to become an entrepreneur.
  • What mystery ingredient is non-toxic, and has powerful anti-tumor, anti-anxiety, and anti-inflammatory effects?
  • How the vegan diet changed Charlie’s life.
  • How to encourage people about healthy food.
  • What makes fast food restaurants criminal?

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

People go vegan for different reasons. Some of us are drawn to a plant-based diet because of the health implications, some of us can’t stand the thought of the cruelty of industrial farming. Jessica was inspired to go vegan after a trip to Sea World. Realizing just how unhappy the dolphins were, Jessica knew she had to change her lifestyle.

Tired of being sent to steak houses by the vegan apps she was using, Jessica began designing her own. When she saw how many vegan restaurants there were in LA, she had a brain wave: to gather them all together in a street fair and spread the vegan love to as many people as possible. Jessica’s mission is to plant a seed, and create more vegans by making plant-based food affordable and accessible.

The Vegan Street Fair is in its 3rd year and this year will be bigger than ever—the best thing? It’s free, family friendly, and a fantastic way for you to try bite-sized portions of many different vegan delicacies.

It can be tough to navigate our crazy world in a healthy and holistic way. Here are some of Jessica’s tips for doing it with grace:

  • Do what you can – progress over perfection.
  • Find a community of like-minded people, who are on the same journey.
  • Be ok with screwing up – don’t try to be perfect.
  • Don’t want to give up cheese? Check out Miyokos and Yvonne’s Vegan Kitchen for the best vegan alternatives.
  • Check out Vegan Street Fair!

LA’s Vegan Street Fair takes place on 26th March between 11am and 7pm. AND there’s a beer garden! For only $40 you can get a VIP pass, which gets you front of line access to hundreds of vegan stalls. Join us!

What you’ll learn:

  • How to raise children in a plant-based way.
  • How to share veganism with children in an age appropriate way
  • Why the system is set up for certain people to fail.
  • Jessica’s favorite vegan substitutes.
  • The many benefits of giving up dairy.
  • How to survive being a new vegan.
  • Jessica’s best tip for the fair.

Our first question is from Linda, who wants to know which green powders we recommend, and how to choose a high-quality brand.

Soils are over-farmed and the resulting fruits and vegetables don’t contain as many nutrients as they once did. Which means that, even if you eat a rainbow every day, you still need to supplement some essential nutrients. We would recommend Vitaforce. The founder and owner of the brand actually created this powder to heal her own body. Allison has been using it for years; it contains all the greens, vitamins and minerals you need, and it doesn’t taste like garbage.

Our second question comes from Belle and was posted in our Facebook Group. Belle wants to know our thoughts on CBD. Is it a fad, or a healing tool?

Suzy is involved in the green revolution currently occurring in California—CBD is definitely not a fad! CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive component of hemp, and it is very healing. CBD interacts with our own cannabidiol receptors and helps with pain management, insomnia, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and tumor reduction, among other things. It also packs a more powerful antioxidant punch than Vitamin C! For the science behind the claims, check out www.projectcbd.org. CBD is completely non-toxic and non-addictive. But as with every product, some brands are better than others—choose one that uses high doses of high-quality CBD extract.

Unfortunately, the government has now got a patent on CBD, despite the fact this is a completely natural substance. What’s more, the DEA has classified it as a Category 1 controlled substance, despite the fact it will not get you high. But there is a growing movement towards acceptance of this healing plant. An increasing number of studies show the therapeutic benefits of both CBD and THC, and more than half the country’s states have legalized the medical use of marijuana. Want more info, reach out to Suzy on out FB group!

Finally, our third question comes from Sabrina. She wants to know why teeth become prone to cavities, and what we can do about it.

This is a topic we’re incredibly passionate about. Some dentists just drill for the sake of it, even when there are no cavities. But even when cavities ARE present, you don’t necessarily need to get a filling. When you break a bone, your body heals itself. Bones can regenerate, and while teeth are a little different to bone, they’re very similar. According to Dr. Robert Nara, your teeth can heal themselves, all you need to do is use the right tools. If you have enough calcium and magnesium in your diet and in your saliva, you can heal your teeth. Check out Dr. Nara’s book How to be Dentally Self Sufficient. Suzy’s favorite tooth-care tool is baking soda tooth powder because it alkalizes your mouth and helps keep your mouth super clean. But she’s got a few other tips too!

What you’ll learn:

  • The best way to take green powders.
  • How to change your taste buds to enjoy greens.
  • Why taking super greens is essential for your health.
  • Why CBD won’t get you high but will get you healthy.
  • How magnesium and calcium work in synergy.
  • How to identify a cavity on an x-ray
  • Why baking soda helps your teeth.
  • Why gum recession happens and how to prevent it.
  • How to use comfrey root to heal your mouth.
  • How oil pulling helps your teeth and gums.
  • The best teeth health regime.

@9:35 I don’t normally eat this but…..

@37:00 A great mouth health tip!

Tantra may be the “in” thing right now, but it is about so much more than just sex, though orgasms can be a perk! Tantra is not a collection of sexual positions; it is not the Karma Sutra. Rather, it is a way of life. In fact, the word Tantra means to weave, to expand consciousness. It’s more about holding space for your partner and listening than it is about contortionist bedroom acrobatics!

Elise Carr, a former model and journalist, traded in her high heels to dive into sacred spirituality and sexuality. She’s now recognized as Australia’s best Empowerment Mentor. She even trained with the White Tigresses in the art of jade egg practices. Elise is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, Reiki Master, and Tantra Practitioner. She wants to encourage women to work with their yoni to reconnect with the sacred feminine and release the shame that is so often associated with that part of our bodies.

We carry so much negative energy around our yoni – we have forgotten the beauty that is there. It is time to open up that conversation, reconnect with our sensuality. It is ok for us to express and to love ourselves – this is how we heal. Tantra is about learning who we really are. It is the meshing of the physical and the spiritual. It is about self-expression, union, love, and connection.

What you’ll learn:

  • The sacred jade egg practice.
  • Why you want to strengthen your PC muscles.
  • How to work with your yoni to connect deeply with your feminine power.
  • What is Tantra?
  • The eye-gazing technique.
  • How to practice Tantra every day.
  • How to bring chi and ching into your body.
  • The nine paths of yoga and where Tantra fits in.
  • How to release old beliefs and step into your true self.

Let’s face it, losing weight is tough. Making any kind of drastic lifestyle change can seem daunting and difficult. But the alternative is often scarier.

Tim Kaufman was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a condition characterized by hyper mobile joints. His joints were so loose they would simply pop out of their sockets. After a failed operation to fix the issue, Tim became addicted to prescription pain medication. He was also addicted to food. Moving less and less, eating more and more, the weight piled on. He lost his lust for life; he was depressed and used food and prescription drugs as an escape.

After two close relatives passed away from cancer, Tim knew he had to do something. He applied for bariatric surgery. But his health was so bad that his doctor refused to sign it off. He had to take a different approach. He began making small changes. Cutting out red meat. Choosing lower-fat cheeses. Then one day, he watched Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Before the credits rolled, he’d ordered a juicer. A 30-day juice fast later, Tim was well and truly on his way towards better health. But it was Forks over Knives that really gave him a new lease of life.

From being unable to get up from his chair, Tim has gone on to climb mountains, complete 100-mile bike rides, run a marathon. He’s even training for Iron Man. He freed himself from prescription medication and is the fittest he’s ever been. His whole family has felt the benefits. Swapping the buffalo wings and diet Pepsi for a plant-based diet saved his life. He now helps other people transition to a healthier way of life through his blog, Fat Man Rants.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to go from eating cheese burgers to being excited about kale
  • How to set positive intentions
  • How Tim got off the prescription drugs
  • The one reason Tim never went back to his old ways
  • Some juicing no-no’s

How can a billionaire, who lives in a penthouse, who has never had to work in his life, who has never had to choose between paying the rent and buying food, who has never had to think about how to pay for healthcare, be a man of the people? How can he possibly relate to the lives of normal Americans? How can a businessman who bankrupted six of his businesses, and whose net worth would be superior had he simply put his inheritance in a bank, be classed as a great business brain? How can a man who’s made no bones about being sexist, and repeatedly made shockingly derogatory comments about women have had any kind of female following? How did he get voted in?

He talks a good game, that’s how. His rhetoric was appealing to the masses, those who’d been underserved by previous administrations, those tired of the same old statements and lack of change. The “alternative” facts he sprinkled into his speeches, and the questionable “truths” his campaign manager shared probably also helped (incidentally, check out this YouTube clip of Kelly Ann Conway doing Chicago – hilarious!).

But if we look at the solid facts, immigrants are not taking our jobs (and ALL Americans, except for Native Indians, are immigrants anyway!). A wall won’t fix the job crisis or the immigration crisis. The “swamp” isn’t being “drained”, only filled with more people who have no understanding of or interest in, what people really need. Affordable care is the same thing as Obamacare. And the last thing the world needs is more racism and outdated views about women!

Ok, so what can we do? How do we fight lies? How can we shift the story? We have to start the conversation and speak the truth. We’re seeing more and more women rise up and begin to get involved in politics—let’s stand up and be counted, ladies! In the words of Delores Huerta: “Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person is a potential activist, every minute is a chance to change the world.” Let’s not allow fear and anger to stop us living life. No matter what is going on politically, we are in control of our lives. You can be whatever you want it to be – don’t let anybody stop you!

You could eat all the right things and exercise every day, but if your mind believes you’re sick, you will be. On the other hand, if you believe that you are healthy, you can heal anything. Just like Miracle Man Morris Goodman says: man becomes what he thinks.

Khristee Rich fell ill when she was in college. She had chronic fatigue, brain fog, she was bed-ridden much of the time—she couldn’t work, go on dates, socialize, even write an email. But no one knew how to treat her. Doctors didn’t even believe she was ill, stating she was simply “depressed” and “stressed”. One doctor even told her she simply had to accept that she would be sick for the rest of her life. Khristee tried everything, from reiki to qi gong and acupressure, but nothing worked.

Finally, she was diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity—with blood levels of mercury and lead so high she should have been paralyzed or brain damaged. Unwilling to go through potentially fatal medical chelation therapy, Khristee began researching natural chelators. Using a combination of plant foods, supplements and visualization meditations, she freed herself of heavy metals in just one month.

Khristee knew she had a higher purpose than just being sick. She’s now a Visibility and Confidence Coach, and helps entrepreneurs boost their confidence so they can shine. Because when you show up for yourself, you can show up for others. Sign up at The Dancing Curtain for a free PDF: 5 Easy Ways to Boost Confidence and Get More Clients.

It isn’t just the dorky kid at school who gets bullied; you could be beautiful, successful, grown up, and still have to deal with bullies—a toxic friend, an overbearing family member, an unreasonable boss. Drew Ryniewicz found that out early on. At just 14 she was propelled into the limelight on the X-Factor, and despite being gorgeous and talented, she quickly had to contend with cyber trolls from all over the globe, watching and judging her life.

Drew followed her dream of becoming a musician despite the hardship and came to realize that the bigger the dream, the bigger the ridicule that comes with it. She wanted to use that ridicule to empower her life, write music, become the artist she wanted to be, and prove the trolls wrong. For the last two years, she’s dedicated her life to the anti-bullying movement and has become the face to Allstar Nation Tour, a music-based anti-bullying campaign. Drew shares her story to show other girls that they are not alone, and to help them see the beauty and potential that is within them. She’s even given an inspiring TED talk entitled “Having Ridiculous Dreams.” Drew challenges people to overcome rejection, live ridiculously, and follow their dreams.

Plus, our rockstar producer Roxy Flo talks about producing Drew’s song Empire the most beautiful, lyrical, honest song she’s written.

What you’ll learn:

  • What can you do if you are being bullied?
  • What Simon thought.
  • The definition of success.
  • Why bullies bully.
  • How Drew stays fit and healthy on the road.
  • Drew’s fairytale ending.
  • Allison’s music obsession.
  • How does music heal our soul?
  • Drew spills the beans on her idols!
