About John:

Most can achieve a goal and be pleasantly satisfied with their results but to continually create new tasks to accomplish and to reinvent yourself is the mark of a versatile and motivated individual.  It is the definition of father, athlete, actor, entrepreneur, talk show host, philanthropist, wellness advocate, vegan and champion: John Salley.

A proud native of Brooklyn, New York, John found a love for basketball at an early age.  He accepted a Basketball Scholarship to Georgia Tech to play for legendary head coach Bobby Cremins. From there Salley went on to become a 15-year NBA veteran and was the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams.  During the 80’s, Salley was a member of the Detroit Piston “Bad Boys” squad.  Salley went on to Chicago playing with Michael Jordan as part of the Bulls 1996 championship team.  In 1999, Phil Jackson invited Salley to come to Los Angeles to provide experience and leadership to the 1999-2000 Lakers’ championship team.

In 1999, Phil Jackson invited Salley to come to Los Angeles to provide experience and leadership to the 1999-2000 Lakers’ championship team.

After his retirement from the NBA in 2000, Salley explored several opportunities in both television and film.  John’s film credits include Bad Boys 1 & 2, Eddie and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Confession of a Shopaholic. John has served as host for numerous award shows and was also the host of The John Salley Block Party on 100.3 The Beat Morning Show in Los Angeles.  John recently hosted the Reunion Shows of VH-1’s #1 rated show, Basketball Wives.

John spent 7 years serving as the co-host of the Emmy nominated, critically acclaimed “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” on Fox Sports Net.  He was also the host of the sports talk show “Ballers” on BET.  John is also the head of his own production company, John Salley Presents, Inc., where John uses his uncanny ability to find unique and interesting people and projects for television, film and Internet. In April 2011 until recently, John hosted his own talk show Game On! airing on The Reelz Channel. In addition, John was also a co-host on The Car Show, which aired on Speed Channel.

John is actively involved with Operation Smile, PETA and the fight against Diabetes.  In addition, John is involved with PCRM and visited Washington in Nov ’09 and May ’10, speaking to Congress about the Child Nutrition Act, asking Members to support legislation that would increase vegetarian options in meals served in public schools.

John has adopted a plant based (raw vegan) lifestyle, and is a frequent speaker at VegFest’s across the USA. As a Wellness Advocate, one of John’s main missions in life is to continue to educate people on the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle thru better eating habits. Today, we have a packed studio at the Food Heals Podcast.  Today’s topic of healing your pets through natural therapies has compelled us to reveal the lurkers in our studio!  Not only do we have special guest, Dan Masciarelli, but we also have Obie, Jackson and Charlotte.

Charlotte is an 11 year old Beagle and Jackson is a 2 year old terrier mix, and they belong to Allison.  Suzy has Obie, her 9 year old Bichon Frise that resembles an ewok.  His name is a tip of the hat to none other than Star Wars.  Our confession is that the dogs are actually always in the studio with us.  They think we are are getting together for a play date, when it is time to record a podcast.  They have no idea we are actually working here!  So, today we are letting the dogs take the spotlight.

Today’s episode about healing your pets, comes as a result of us healing Jackson.  So, to help tell the story of Jackson’s healing, we have invited Jackson’s Dad, Dan Masciarelli to the show to help share the story of Jackson’s healing.  We are very excited to share this story and hope that many other beloved pets can be healed too.

LISTEN NOW!

Sandee got interested in living a non-toxic lifestyle many decades ago. As a little girl, she experienced a bad reaction to the ingredients in a perfume that left red welts on her skin. As a teenager, she participated in the first annual Earth Day and has been fired up about a more natural lifestyle ever since.

Her company, No Tox Life was born from the desire to provide natural, toxin-free vegan body care to help you live a cleaner, greener lifestyle. No Tox Life is a local, family-run business and each product is handmade using the highest-quality ingredients they can find.

If you look at big brands in the health and beauty products industry, you will find harsh detergents, petroleum-derived ingredients, toxic preservatives, and a host of other ingredients with dangerous side effects. No Tox Life doesn’t believe in using ingredients you can’t pronounce. Their products are made with gentle oils such as olive, coconut, and rice bran oil. They use mango butter, shea butter, essential oils, natural clays and minerals – all ingredients your skin will love.

Sandee stopped by The Food Heals Podcast to share her wisdom and knowledge on how to live a “No Tox Life,” how to choose organic, non-toxic beauty products, what ingredients to avoid and why she and her husband went vegan!

Callie has a unique background including working in a print shop, doing sales, administration, design, marketing, photography, and more recently studying web development.  Her combination of skills are all put to use at different points in the business.

Can you heal cancer naturally with a raw vegan diet, meditation and yoga? Amanda did!

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women and almost 4,000 cases were fatal just last year. Conventional treatments for cervical cancer include chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, hysterectomies, or the removal of lymph nodes and ovaries. When Amanda Deming was diagnosed with cervical cancer she was determined to cure herself naturally through a raw vegan diet, meditation, and yoga. Without any conventional treatment she is now cancer-free.

Amanda stopped by The Food Heals Podcast to share her healing story, give her tips for what to do if you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer and why it is just as important to read your wine labels as it is to read you food labels!

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

How do celebrities get their recipes and healthy food ideas? They ask Jason! Enjoy this #ThrowbackThursday episode where we chat with celebrity chef Jason Wrobel, and get a detailed look into his recipes and cooking style.

Where do all the major diseases in our country come from? If you look closely, you’ll notice that the big contributors are an overload of meat & dairy products in our diets, and the addition of processed foods & added sugars. When you discover this correlation, how can you not act on it? It’s simple! Remove these foods, and remove disease. Case in point: going vegan cured Jason’s asthma.

Ever wondered why juice cleanses are so effective? Jason explains that the amount of energy needed to digest regular food is massive, so much so that almost no energy remains for healing. But, when you juice, this takes far less resources to digest, and allows your body to heal itself while absorbing the important nutrients. It’s a concentration of nutrients!

Raw foods… sound gross? Research shows that cooking foods with high temperatures can cause foods to lose essential nutrients and enzymes. Focusing on eating raw foods keeps all the elements of a food intact, making for easy digestion and nutrient absorption.

And we all know the troubles with processed foods… Jason breaks down the relationship between foods and our body in simple terms, explaining that our body just doesn’t recognized the chemicals and modified nutrients in processed foods. It doesn’t know what to do with it, and therefore turns it into fat storage, where the toxins continue to linger in your system.

There is a recurring theme we’ve noticed in all of our episodes so far; do you remember what it is? Doctors don’t prescribe healthy foods and alternative medicine to their patients, because that wouldn’t create repeat customers for the healthcare system. Sound like insanity to you? Jason dives in to some of the details on this irony at the end of the episode.

A snippet from Jason’s website:

Jason Wrobel is a world-renowned leader in organic raw vegan cuisine, culinary education and epicurean entertainment.  With a focus on radical simplicity and artful presentation, he imbues his ecstatic raw food creations with the energy of fresh, local, organic produce and the healing properties of raw superfoods, which have rendered his dishes hands-down favorites among celebrity clients, and regular folk alike. J-Wro fans Woody Harrelson, Jeremy Piven, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, John C. Reilly, Steve Buscemi, Isabelle Adjani, Oren Moverman and Russell Simmons, consistently (and effusively) rave about his healthy, innovative and delicious plant-based creations.

This episode is a #ThrowbackThursday to our film shoot with Jason when we interviewed him for the film, Food Heals. Check out the trailer at foodheals.tv.

Do you have kids? Chances are it can be tough to instill the habits of a natural healthy life into your family with all that day-to-day chaos! We’re excited that we got to chat with Kimberly Van Der Beek, who dished out some great tips for balancing a healthy lifestyle while raising a family.

No one’s perfect, and we would never ask you to be! Kimberly implements the famous 80/20 principle with regards to things like meals, toys and vitamins. Don’t sweat a basket of bread or plastic toys 20% of the time, as long as it doesn’t bleed over into the healthier 80%!

Less is more. Quality over quantity. We’ve all heard it before, but why? If you invest in high quality products, you’ll use them more, for longer, and save money in the long run. Example: Kimberly’s family has been using microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. Not only does it save them money, it saves paper, and saves waste as well!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues – from picking the best non-toxic makeup and getting rid of wrinkles naturally, to learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet and the healing power of nutrition.

Wanna live a more eco-friendly conscious life? Then this is the episode for you! How can you create beautiful radiant skin? How can you rid yourself of acne or allergies? The answer is not with medication and ointments – it’s food (organic, local and vegan of course!)

The Eco-Vegan Gal, Whitney Lauritsen began focusing on food and health in her early 20’s, and unleashed a snowball of information as she attempted to learn as much as possible. In the end, the answer for her was going vegan.

LISTEN NOW!

We live in an interesting time; we know so much more about food and nutrition than we ever have, but at the same time, we’re much more critical about dieting trends or “fads.” Why would you go gluten-free if you don’t have celiac disease? Because it’s healthier!

Whitney’s allergies wouldn’t go away with medication, but after some experimenting, she cut out gluten from her diet and her allergies completely disappeared. Why didn’t any doctors suggest this? We’re guessing because cutting out gluten doesn’t sell prescriptions… But that’s just our guess.

Here’s an interesting suggestion, especially if you’re overly critical of vegans: give it a try! It’s probably the easiest way to figure out if it really works. Try cutting out certain things one at a time, and see how you feel. Observe what the impact is.

We hope you enjoy our conversation with Whitney, and even more, we hope it inspires you to make a change in your life!

Fat. Sick. Nearly dead. Have you heard of it? Joe Cross created and starred in this viral documentary about cleansing your body with juice alone. That’s right; no food! Only juice. Joe was able to completely cure himself of chronic urticaria and lose over 100 pounds, thanks solely to healthy juicing. Luckily, it’s not true fasting! You’re still getting nutrients and energy, though you’re not consuming any solid food. It’s purely “liquid sunshine!”

LISTEN NOW!

Joe’s case of chronic urticaria – chronic hives & swelling – was met with the usual response of “meds, meds, and more meds!” Did you expect anything different? Well, as you may guess, medication didn’t cure Joe’s disease, and after eight years he began experimenting with alternative methods of healing. And yes; by alternative, we mean food. Real food.

Joe gave himself a deadline of two years to go completely plant-based, and measure the results. Step one was a 60-day juice cleanse. Step two was a 90-day plant-based diet. After this time, Joe ditched all of his medications. He had a brand new body, and a new outlook on life.

Joe’s mantra nowadays is to eat plant-based food as much as possible. This gives him the healthy system and positive vibes to maintain his lifestyle, but also to indulge once in awhile in animal & processed foods. Life is a journey – enjoy it!

Our Favorite Moments:

@ 07:08 “Liquid sunshine.”
