In 2010, Maryam Henein’s 15-year career as an investigative journalist, eco-entrepreneur, and producer hit a milestone with the release of her award-winning documentary Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Ellen Page. It also marked her directorial debut.

Maryam has more than 15 years experience working as an investigative journalist, a documentary and television producer and professional researcher. Her credits include producing documentaries for the BBC, Discovery, Robert Greenwald and Morgan Spurlock. As a journalist she has written for publications such as The Los Angeles Times, Science & Spirit Magazine, and The Cairo Times. Following a near death experience several years ago, Maryam delved into the science of nutrition and alternative ways of healing.

This episode is filled with Maryam’s fascinating journey from fast food worker, to being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder.  She shares very practical tips about how your food can help you heal.  Maryam also takes a moment to share her experience with some of the more mysterious supplements, like colloidal silver.  It really is amazing what the body can do with a little help!  Maryam also shares the impact of bees on our food supply.  It’s something we all need to be aware of and help drive change in the political arena.  This episode is chock full of great information that you won’t want to miss!

Kerri Kasem is a multimedia personality, producer, and writer who has anchored numerous music, talk and entertainment programs for both radio and television. Kerri is the daughter of the late radio host and icon Casey Kasem. Since 1997, Kerri has followed in her father’s footsteps, hosting many radio programs. Kasem was co-host of the internationally syndicated Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx for four years, but left the show to fight for her father, and to lobby for the “Visitation Bill” AB2034 in California – a vision which in less than six months has seen legislation in four other states. She founded the Kasem Cares Foundation to establish and fight for the rights to have visitation and reasonable access to an ailing parent, especially when under the care and control of an uncooperative spouse or sibling.

Today’s #TBT episode features an excerpt from our interview with Kerri for the Food Heals documentary.  Kerri has used food to heal her body from ADD, and she has become a champion of healthy, plant based nutrition as the cure for modern day disease.  Kerri has used nutrition for her own healing and she encourages others to try holistic nutrition instead of relying on prescriptions.  Don’t miss a minute of this episode!

About The Film:

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.

As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist.

As eye-opening as Blackfish and as inspiring as An Inconvenient Truth, this shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet, and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population.

Today is the final episode of Jill’s 3-part journey of surviving breast cancer.  In this episode, Jill shares her favorite juice recipes with us.  Jill’s commitment to healthy living was solidified during her cancer treatments.  She found that juicing could give her body the concentration of healing vitamins, minerals and nutrients that her body needed to heal from the devastating effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Jill has made juicing part of her daily routine, so we asked her to share her favorite juice recipes with us.  If you have not had a chance to listen to part 1 and part 2 of Jill’s story, you will probably want to go back and listen to them first!

Jill’s Favorite Juices:

Super Simple Juice:

2 fennel bulbs

3 pears unless they are asian , then use 2

2 lemons – most nutrition is in the pith, cut the outer layer of skin mostly off and then press the whole lemon with as much *pith on it as possible.

2 inches of ginger

****pith is the white part of the lemon that is just inside the outer layer of skin

Approximate cost is $5 and it will make 2 full servings.  It’s delicious.

Mexican Flair

2 bunches of cilantro (can also be parsley if you don’t like cilantro)

1 jicama – peeled

2 red bell peppers (can use any colored sweet peppers, just not green)

1 whole cucumber

1/4 red onion – be careful because the juice will burn your eyes

1 orange – peeled leaving as much pith as possible

2 or 3 limes

2 stalks of celery

**optional add a small piece of jalapeño, not the inside or seeds.  It you get it too hot, wait a day to drink it and the heat will lessen.

Approximate cost $9 and it will make about 4 servings.  A little spicy and a little sweet.

Juicing tip:   Heat and oxygen degrade nutrients in your juice, so if you want to press a larger batch of juice and preserve the nutrients, you can.  Buy mason jars and store fresh juice in small jars so there is less oxygen exposure.  Fill it literally to the brim and then seal the mason jar.  You don’t have to juice every day.  Juice once and pour into small airtight mason jars (have to fill them to the brim so there is no room for oxygen) and it will stay as fresh as possible.

Today’s episode is part 2 of Jill Tomback’s cancer survival story.   If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the story of Jill’s diagnosis at age 25, and her path to find the best treatment plan for ridding her body of cancer.  We also discuss why Jill ended up having 9 surgeries in just over 4 years!  If you haven’t had a chance to go back  and listen to part 1 of this episode, you can listen to it here.

We get to the emotional side of cancer in today’s episode and Jill also walks us through that reasons that she had so many surgeries – there were 9 in 4 years, so that’s a bit remarkable.  Jill also shares with us her reasons for second guessing the Western treatment that she had, and also re-iterates her resolve to try Gerson therapy if she ever faces this issue again.

Before we get to the episode, we wanted to make a quick public service announcement.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so you may notice more focus on the “Pink” campaigns.  There are many “charities” that say they support breast cancer, and actually a very small percentage of their budget actually goes towards the cause.  Instead their CEO’s have outrageous salaries and many people besides cancer patients are benefitting from your donation.

That’s why we recommend making a donation to the Gerson Center.  It is treatment that we believe in from folks that can stretch dollars to reach as many people as possible.  Do your research before you give, and make sure your donation dollars are really going to support the cause.

“If I had to do it all over again, I would not choose chemotherapy.  I would choose the natural treatment and use Gerson therapy.” ~ Jill Tomback

Today’s episode tells the story of our friend, Jill Tomback who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25.  Jill  shares her story of getting the diagnosis, how she chose her treatment, the difficult decision to get a double mastectomy and ultimately how she healed her body.  One of the incredible things that you will hear Jill talk about is the toll that chemotherapy took on her body.  She was left weak and depleted, with virtually no immune system.

Jill underwent different types of chemo and radiation, and although she was able to aid in her recovery with acupuncture, she would never wish her side effects on anyone.  Jill has educated herself since her diagnosis and harrowing experience and is firm in her decision that she would never choose chemo or radiation again.  Instead, Jill says she would opt for Gerson Therapy.

Gerson therapy is illegal in the United States.  Jill even discussed this option with her Oncologist at one point, and all he could do is repeat this sentence.  “I am only allowed to recommend the types of treatment that we have discussed. ”  In probing further, Jill got very clear on the fact that despite the fact that Gerson Therapy has a higher success rate for cancer than chemo does, her Oncologist was completely prohibited from recommending that as an option.

If you have never heard of Gerson Therapy, essentially it is a full blown assault on cancer, in the same way that chemo is, but instead of using highly toxic drugs, it utilizes massive doses of fresh juice to flood the body with all the nutrients it needs to fight.  Then to remove the toxins from your body, coffee enemas would be used.  There are lots of resources available to educate yourself on Gerson Therapy below if you’d like to learn more.

Magda’s Tips for Conscious Living and Eating:

1.  Top ingredients to get into your diet immediately:

Chia seeds – this is a super food and it is packed with fiber and good fat.  There are recipes on Magda’s website for some different chia seed “puddings” that you can make ahead of time and grab for breakfast.

Lentils – it’s a great source of plant based protein, and it also packs a lot of fiber.

Flax seed – 2 T. each morning will help prevent breast cancer and it has actually been proven to shrink tumors.  You can freshly grind your own by using a standard coffee grinder.

Hemp seeds – you already know hemp can save the world, and there are so many ways to get them into your diet.  Just pick any way you want and get it in there.

Pink Himalayan Salt – it has all the trace minerals we are deficient in (84-92 of them).  Many times if you try to go meatless, people will say they are “craving meat”.  Most of the time that is not the case.  You are craving the trace minerals that you previously got from the meat.  So pink sea salt can replace those minerals and keep you meat free!

Coconut – it’s the one food Magda would want when she is stranded on an island.  The coconut water is filled with electrolytes and the flesh is so healthy.  There’s so many uses for this versatile food

Kale – it is so packed with nutrition that it should be in your rotation.  It doesn’t have to be a daily thing, but experiment and find types of kale you like and then explore ways to be more in your diet.

2.  Thrive market is a wonderful resource for responsible food choices.  If you don’t have great choices in your local area, you should definitely check them out.  They won’t steer you wrong.

3.  Not every type of diet works for every body type.  Look into your Ayurvedic body type and eat according to that.  It will give you what is best for YOUR body.

4.  When you consider transitioning to a plant based diet, consider this:

  1. Think outside of ourselves and make the transition to “we”.
  2. Don’t overwhelm yourself with black and white thinking.  Allow yourself time to transition and be gentle with yourself.

5.  Starting your day with warm lemon water really gets your digestion going and it also helps balance your alkalinity.  It’s a great way to start the day.

Magda has an online course on conscious eating that you can sign up for.  We can’t wait to take the course because we know we will learn things we never knew!  The course is called Conscious Eating 101 and you can sign up for it here.
