Today’s episode celebrates the change of season, so we wanted to bring you our favorite Fall recipes.  Something just feels different in the Fall and we love to use those flavors that we associate with Fall to create variety in meals.  We also had a chance to talk with The Beverly Hills Farmgirl, Dana Slatkin about her favorite recipes for this time of year.  She was a wealth of information and she also gives us the best idea we have ever heard.  You have to listen to the episode to get it, but I’ll give you a hint – it’s the best way ever to keep your kids from eating so much candy at Halloween!  You are going to love this tip.  If you use this tip this year, please let us know how it goes!  We would love to hear how your children respond and all the good that ca come out of this one great idea!

Our favorite quote, that is so appropriate for this episode, comes from Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

It’s that time of year!  Cold and flu season!  Even though these are normally thought of as winter time ailments, the truth is you can get them any time of year, for a variety of reasons.  Although your first inclination may be to run to the Doctor to get some medication and an anti-biotic, we want to show you how you can treat these viral infections naturally, without subjecting your body to potentially harmful medications.

It is important to realize that both colds and the flu are viral infections, which means that they are completely unfazed by any sort of anti-biotic.  The only thing prescriptions can do is treat the symptoms.  So, we want to give you some ways to help heal yourself from these infections naturally.  Your immune system can become stronger as it gets exposed to more germs.   Giving your body the opportunity to fight off infection, actually strengthens your immune system.  Your body really was designed to provide you with immunity to toxins, so letting it work the way it was intended is a good immune system “work-out”.

Even though you may have a cold, we don’t expect you to suffer!  There are some natural ways to treat the symptoms and get fast relief from the duress your body is under.  It can help to know why you got sick in the first place.  There are so many “wives tales” and myths about how you actually catch a cold, and most of them are simply not true.  It’s not because you went outside with wet hair, the weather changed, or you stayed outside in the cold too long.

The main cause of the common cold, is chronic stress.  Making a regular practice of reducing your stress level, through meditation, yoga, massage, eliminating toxic environments, and eating healthy, goes a long way towards preventing colds!

Tune in to this episode to hear the best natural remedies for the common cold!  We reveal our favorite vitamins, minerals and herbs that will shorten your cold, and relieve your symptoms.  We also share some tips on getting healthy injections, when you need an extra immune system boost!

Do you wake up every day doing what you love or dreading what you do? At The Food Heals Podcast we believe that living your passion is a key component to good health.

If we’re not happy then we’re not healthy. If we are stressed out working long hours, stuck in traffic and then have no outlet, no joy in our day than what is the point? To get a bigger house, bigger car and nicer clothes? Those things do not bring true happiness. What will bring true happiness is doing what you love on a regular basis.

So ask yourself, are you truly doing things you are passionate about on a regular basis? Are you giving an outlet to your creativity or are you stifling it and saying, “I’ll take that painting class next month” or I’ll write my novel in a few years when I have more time.” I have news for you. It will never be the right time and you will never have more time. The time is now. Start today!

In this episode, I welcome Vince Lia to the co-host chair to help me talk about doing what we love to do. We just both happen to be passionate about a healthy vegan life, but it doesn’t matter what it is you are passionate about, the same principles apply. If you haven’t listened to Vince’s episode on The Food Heals Podcast where he shares how becoming a vegan helped his ulcerative colitis, then be sure to check that out here.

About John:

Most can achieve a goal and be pleasantly satisfied with their results but to continually create new tasks to accomplish and to reinvent yourself is the mark of a versatile and motivated individual.  It is the definition of father, athlete, actor, entrepreneur, talk show host, philanthropist, wellness advocate, vegan and champion: John Salley.

NBA star and vegan athlete John Salley on this week's Throwback Thursday episode of The Food Heals podcast. Check it out at http://bit.ly/TBT2JohnSalley

John Salley was the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams.

A proud native of Brooklyn, New York, John found a love for basketball at an early age.  He accepted a Basketball Scholarship to Georgia Tech to play for legendary head coach Bobby Cremins. From there Salley went on to become a 15-year NBA veteran and was the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams.  During the 80’s, Salley was a member of the Detroit Piston “Bad Boys” squad.  Salley went on to Chicago playing with Michael Jordan as part of the Bulls 1996 championship team.  In 1999, Phil Jackson invited Salley to come to Los Angeles to provide experience and leadership to the 1999-2000 Lakers’ championship team.

After his retirement from the NBA in 2000, Salley explored several opportunities in both television and film.  John’s film credits include Bad Boys 1 & 2, Eddie and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Confession of a Shopaholic. John has served as host for numerous award shows and was also the host of The John Salley Block Party on 100.3 The Beat Morning Show in Los Angeles.  John recently hosted the Reunion Shows of VH-1’s #1 rated show, Basketball Wives.

John spent 7 years serving as the co-host of the Emmy nominated, critically acclaimed “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” on Fox Sports Net.  He was also the host of the sports talk show “Ballers” on BET.  John is also the head of his own production company, John Salley Presents, Inc., where John uses his uncanny ability to find unique and interesting people and projects for television, film and Internet. In April 2011 until recently, John hosted his own talk show Game On! airing on The Reelz Channel. In addition, John was also a co-host on The Car Show, which aired on Speed Channel.

John is actively involved with Operation Smile, PETA and the fight against Diabetes.  In addition, John is involved with PCRM and visited Washington in Nov ’09 and May ’10, speaking to Congress about the Child Nutrition Act, asking Members to support legislation that would increase vegetarian options in meals served in public schools.

John has adopted a plant based (raw vegan) lifestyle, and is a frequent speaker at VegFest’s across the USA. As a Wellness Advocate, one of John’s main missions in life is to continue to educate people on the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle thru better eating habits. With a passion for real food, wine and spirits, John has contributed articles to Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado and LA Confidential.  You can follow John on Facebook, Twitter @thejohnsalley.com and his website,www.johnsalley.com. Rebecca is a lifelong friend, and by day she is a rockstar producer in Los Angeles, but by night she pursues her passion projects. If she’s not channeling her inner Britney at the karaoke bar then she is usually traveling across the US producing television shows and documentaries. It’s a busy life but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Today she is here to give her top tips to de-stress all throughout your work day.

LISTEN NOW on iTunes!

Rebecca’s Tips:

Morning – Do a run or some sort of exercise in the morning.  Rebecca chooses an easy, 30 minute run and uses the Apple Watch to track her progress.  Rebecca starts her day with a smoothie and she’s been adding Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil to her shake.  She loves the coconut flavor.

Lunch – Do little things to stretch and stand.  It may be just standing to eat your lunch.  Rebecca has a few yoga stretches that she does at her desk.  She has started using the timer on her  Apple Watch Sport  to prompt her to stand up.

Mid-afternoon slump –  Eat a very healthy snack that is protein based.  Nothing with carbs, sugar or gluten for this snack.  Normally her snack of choice is almonds with a cup of green tea.

Evening – Save at least 30 minutes (preferably an hour) before bedtime to unplug, and unwind in an unplugged way, so that you can prepare your mind and body to sleep.

Allison’s Tips:

Morning – Write in your journal for the purpose of gratitude and starting your day in the right frame of mind; starting in a place of positivity and set your intentions for the day.

Lunch – Eat a healthy lunch.  Don’t go for options that will make you feel badly later.  Take Digestive Enzymes With Probiotics  with your lunch to help your food digest properly.

Mid-afternoon slump – Drink an organic fresh-squeezed green juice to give you an energy boost.

Evening – Take a hot bath with meditation and music.  Sitting and chilling in a hot bath is calming and again recite your gratitude affirmations.
