90: Beating Addiction and Reversing Diabetes with the Sud Brothers

05/14/2016

We’re delighted to welcome back Adam and Bobby Sud. These twin brothers are dedicated to making the world a healthier place. If you haven’t already, check out their inspiring two-part interview in Episodes 68 and 69. The feedback these episodes received was phenomenal.

Adam is a holistic lifestyle coach. He’s developed a program for treating addiction and preventing relapses using plant based nutrition. The mindful act of preparing healthy meals is an act of self care that reaffirms positive change. “It is saying that you choose to be a better version of yourself physically, spiritually, mentally, today, than you were the day before,” says Adam. Since recovering from Adderall addiction, Adam has been on a mission to help his twin brother Bobby, a passionate wildlife enthusiast and film-maker, get healthy.

Just a few months ago, Bobby was a type 2 diabetic, taking multiple prescription meds and suffering from depression. After moving in with Adam and following his plant based diet, Bobby is now on his way to recovery. In just three months, he has lost 50 pounds, reversed his diabetes and lowered his cholesterol and blood pressure. How? Well, in addition to a 100% vegan diet, Bobby goes for an hour-long walk 4 to 5 times a week. Eat well, give your body what it needs, and it will quickly return to optimum health. “It shows you how powerful the Standard American Diet is in such a negative way. It can allow someone to keep on weight, when it so easily comes off when you give your body the right fuel.”

But many people are addicted to processed foods and junk foods, which are designed specifically to create a high-dopamine response in the brain. They stimulate the pleasure sensors and create a sense of need for high sugar, high fat foods. Adam and Bobby believe that plant-based nutrition should be standard practice in addiction recovery and disease recovery. Once you start healing your body with a vegan diet, you can also begin dealing with and detoxing from the negative emotions that are keeping you stuck in destructive patterns. “If you leave out any one part, you’re missing the complete recovery”, says Adam.

“if you think I’m any less addicted to my current lifestyle, than I was to my destructive lifestyle, you’re fooling yourself”. Adam shifted his addictive personality from destructive to constructive. The “addiction” to this plant-based lifestyle allows him to make connections that give his life meaning. Adam knows he’s never going back to his old way of life.

Going vegan is probably the most powerful thing you can do to help the planet. “The fact is, you can drive a hummer and be a vegan and make more of an environmental impact than a non-vegan that drives a Prius or rides their bike to work.”

Adam and Bobby are about to embark on a big adventure. On 16 th May, they’re setting off on the Ice Breaker Run to promote mental health awareness across the US in partnership with The Herren Project and Mental Health America. They’re running across the country from Los Angeles to Washington with a group of ultra runners. “It’s crazy endurance athletes running for mental health.” For 24 days, 24 hours a day, teams of runners will take it in turns to run a marathon a day. Adam and Bobby will be doing a podcast and releasing daily videos—each runner has overcome some form of mental health issue, and will share their inspirational stories. At the end of the run, Mental Health America will kick off Mental Health Awareness week with the screening of Bobby’s short film about the entire trip. Follow Adam and Bobby’s journey and buy a t-shirt to support the cause!

The Sud Brothers will be back next week to answer your questions about overcoming ADD without drugs, detoxing from addiction and more!

Adam Sud’s Bio

A little over 3 years ago Adam Sud weighed 300lbs,  was a type II diabetic, a drug addict, fast food addict, and suffering from severe depression. Adam was diagnosed as a diabetic his first day at in-patient rehab.  After rehab he moved to California into a sober-living house.  Adam took it upon himself to reverse his type II diabetes and so he implemented a plant strong nutrition plan into his recovery program of medication and therapy. What Adam didn’t know was nutrition would become the backbone of his entire recovery.  Within 6 months Adam reversed his diabetes and today he is over 3 years sober and weighs 170lbs.   Adam realized that nutrition has an amazing power in regards to addiction recovery.  Adam became a certified holistic lifestyle coach and developed a program using nutrition as a tool for addiction recovery and relapse prevention.  He now run groups at sober-living houses and Intensive Out-Patient Therapy centers in LA.  He recently had the honor of speaking at Rip Esselstyn’s Engine 2 plant based health immersion in Arizona and has been invited back as a speaker for 2016.   Adam has had the honor of being a guest on the Rich Roll podcast, Running To Mental Health podcast, and have been featured on Forks Over Knives.
