Today’s guest is Alison Crowley. She’s the Owner of The Yoga Prescription and her business is special because her specialty is teaching Yoga for those with cancer or other long term illnesses. She focuses on restorative yoga and healing. She calls what she does “gentle yoga” and it is a very specific practice of yoga poses, breathing and meditation in a specific order to promote healing and restoration. This episode is packed with information about yoga and how it can be used to enhance your quality of life. Alison shares her wealth of knowledge with us!
The Yoga PrescriptionTM uses yoga therapy to meet the needs of specific health concerns. Yoga therapy is the practice of gentle yoga poses, breathing, meditation, and visualization techniques used in a particular order to improve overall health, while working with physical limitations. From relieving chronic back pain to serving as part of a support system for those in cancer treatment, we create specialized prescriptions for individual and group needs.
With your doctor’s approval, yoga therapy is practiced in conjunction with your current medical care and does not replace it. Yoga therapy re-educates the body to move safely and more comfortably, and is an excellent maintenance program for supporting better emotional and physical health.
Above all yoga therapy helps to combat stress, which is at the root of many chronic health problems. By supporting the parasympathetic nervous system, our yoga therapy prescriptions help to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, boost the immune system, and provide a sense of calm and relaxation.
Alison Crowley and Kathleen Ross-Allee are co-founders of The Yoga PrescriptionTM and co-creators of the yoga therapy programs at Cedars-Sinai’s Tower Hematology Oncology Medical Group and The Center for Radiation Therapy of Beverly Hills. They are graduates of Loyola Marymount University’s Yoga Therapy Rx Certification Program, the first and only university accredited program in the United States where Kathleen now serves as Managing Director. They are registered members of the National Yoga Alliance (YA) at the 500-hr level. Alison and Kathleen are currently enrolled in Jnani Chapman’s Yoga in Cancer and Chronic Illness (YCat) level 2 Certification Program. They are also members of the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). Alison has been teaching yoga since 2001. She received her training at The Center for Yoga in Los Angeles, where she also taught and later served as manager and marketing director of the studio. Kathleen began her business ‘Leen Bodies in 1991, as an ACE-certified personal trainer in Los Angeles specializing in post-rehabilitation exercise programs; she completed her initial yoga training at The Center for Yoga in Los Angeles in 2002.
Combining their knowledge of fitness, illness/injury rehabilitation and yoga therapy, Alison and Kathleen offer a unique perspective through their teaching that is complemented by their philosophy to make yoga safe, enjoyable, and accessible to all.
