Allison Micco’s life changed dramatically the moment she began seeing her anxiety as a gift, an opportunity to learn and grow. Podcaster, Spirit Junkie and Anxiety Hacker, she’s now on a mission to help soulful women go from struggling with stress to learning how to love their anxiety.

On the latest episode of The Food Heals Podcast and the prequel to our Spirit Junkie Podcast Series, Allison describes how she turned her anxiety into her greatest strength.

OCD, panic disorder, general anxiety disorder, depression. It was a dark time for Allison. On the outside she was a party animal; they even called her, “Hurricane Allison.” On the inside, she was a mess, suffering in silence. Until one day she realized this anxiety was separating her from everything she wanted to do.

Allison found the Spirit Junkie community by chance, and it has been life-changing. She suddenly stopped seeing her anxiety as something that held her back. She began seeing it as her greatest feature. And then everything changed. Now she’s on a mission, to help women free themselves from anxiety and live to their fullest, happiest potential. She wanted to create what she needed when she was really struggling: the Don’t Freak Out Podcast was born. From nutrition, biohacking, mindfulness and more you’ll learn how to stop freaking out and to start loving life on Allison’s brand new show.

The Spirit Junkie movement is a global community of people on a mission to elevate each other and infuse love into everything they do, sparked by Gabby Bernstein’s book Spirit Junkie: A Radical Road to Self-Love and Miracles. Through masterclasses and workshops, you are encouraged to share your story, let go of “imposter syndrome”, see your true value and potential, and dive head first into your dream life so that you can help others to heal and rise up.

To anyone who feels called to Gabby’s digital masterclass, Allison has two words: “DO IT! It’s food for your soul.” As a Spirit Junkie, wherever you are in the world, you have a tribe, a supportive sister (and brother)-hood of like-minded souls.

Now more than ever we need to stand up, share our story, and follow our dream of a mission-driven business. We’ve been born at a revolutionary time in history and consciousness; the world is wounded, there’s division and suffering; we need to step up, make a change, and spread the message of love.

Listen to your soul’s call—it will change every single area of your life. The Spirit Junkie Digital Masterclass is one of the greatest things you can do. Get out of your own way, and create a life that you are psyched to wake up for. Today is the first day of the rest of your amazing, ecstatic life.

About Us:

Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!

The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

When you eat the whole plant, you’re getting the whole deal. That’s why we find so many healing plants in nature. Interestingly, almost every pharmaceutical medicine has its roots in nature. But modern medicine extracts one compound and turns it into pill form (with undesirable side effects). When you eat a whole plant however, you’re getting all the other nutrients working synergistically together to heal your body. Food Heals favorites Joy and Jay are passionate about whole tonic herbs. From that passion, Jing Slingers were born.

Joy is a badass cop turned anti-aging superfood master. Jay is a yogi and tonic herbalist with over 50,000 tonic elixirs to his name. Together they create cleverly conscious comfort food that’s as good as your granny’s banana bread with the added benefits of supercharging your health all the way to your cells. (We tried their superfood caramel and can testify to this – best. Caramel. EVER).

Since they were last on the show, the Jing Slingers have been working on a tonic to rival all tonics. Most modern diseases result from a dysfunction of the mitochondria, our cells’ power-producers. These are the molecules responsible for our core life energy. But we live in concrete jungles, breathe in polluted air, are bombarded by wifi radiation, drink chemical water—our cells are overwhelmed. They need a detox tonic. Enter the DNA Detox, an aqueous zeolight solution that penetrates deep into the cells’ mitochondria, binds to environmental toxins, heavy metals, and even BPA’s, and escorts them out of your body. A next level solution to the next level toxicity we are dealing with.

But that’s not all, they’ve also moved back to nature. At their retreat, Waterstone in North Carolina, you can experience life away from wifi signals, polluted air, and stress, and enjoy forest bathing, foraging, and of course, Joy and Jay’s mind-blowing culinary delights. We’ll definitely be going 🙂

What you’ll learn:

  • The surprising benefits of basil
  • The best healthy sugar-free alternatives
  • What monk fruit is and why it needs to feature in your diet
  • Which xylitol products to avoid
  • How to get more Vitamin D out of your mushrooms
  • What goes into a green goddess dressing
  • How walking through nature heals body and soul
  • How to make good bread without the junk
  • Joy’s secret anti-aging superfoods
  • The best tonic herbs for stress
  • How big pharma works
  • The detrimental effects of wifi and what you can do about it
  • The health issues of flying and how to mitigate the risk
  • How to stop aging (it’s all about altering the way your genes are expressed)
  • Why and how sugar ages you
  • Why good cholesterol heals your body
  • How to make healthy salted caramel

Stand Out and Make An Impact

Marina Yanay-Triner is the soul behind Soul in the Raw, a website dedicated to helping people go vegan in a sane, healthy, and delicious way.

Marina’s journey towards a raw vegan lifestyle began when she witnessed her mum’s healing transformation. Marina’s mum had interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder disorder that left her unable to live a normal life. Doctor after doctor prescribed pills and injections but nothing worked. Taking matters into her own hands, she went on a 28-day water fast, before transitioning to a raw vegan lifestyle. She completely healed herself.

Witnessing her mother’s amazing recovery made Marina want to reconnect with her body. In high-school, she’d been sexually assaulted by her boyfriend. This caused Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which affected her digestion and emotions. But when she got into raw plant-based food, she was able to heal her physical and emotional trauma.

Marina set up Soul in the Raw to show vegans and wannabe vegans how delicious and flavorful raw plant-based food can be. It’s not just about being vegan or gluten free, it’s about eating whole, plant-based, unprocessed, natural foods! Sign up to her online course and discover how to go vegan, improve your digestion and make delicious raw foods!

Marina’s tips for digestion:

Did you know that only 3% of Americans get enough fiber? A diet high in processed foods, alck of fiber, and even negative emotions can have an impact on your digestion. Here are a few of Marina’s tips for healthy digestion:

  • Remove oil – oil is a processed food that your body can struggle to process.
  • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
  • Always add a little fat (nuts and seeds) and fiber to your meals
  • Eat simple – have lots of healthy carbs
  • Take care of your gut bacteria – be smart about eating foods that have prebiotics

What you’ll learn:

  • What is the high-raw diet?
  • How to include more living foods into your diet.
  • How eating a little bit less can help your body heal and rejuvenate.
  • How to fast safely.
  • How to reduce your cortisol levels.
  • How to use raw and cooked food to help with energy and sleep.
  • Why oil is difficult to digest, and how to replace it.
  • Why raw food fills you up.
  • Which foods are better cooked.
  • Marina’s secret tip to fight inflammation.

This sexy, savvy duo provides eco-friendly advice on a variety of issues including the healing power of nutrition, living authentically, turning your passion into your career, choosing the best natural health and beauty products, the benefits of a plant-based diet and so much more!

Before going vegan, Nicole Derseweh wanted to travel the world and taste every cheese imaginable. But her health was suffering. As a fitness model, her body looked healthy, but it hid a worrying truth: her high protein diet was stressing out her gall bladder and liver, and her blood pressure was through the roof. With her grandma fighting cancer, and other members of her family unwell, Nicole knew something was wrong. She began looking at her diet.

It took a year between watching her first documentary (Earthlings) to converting to 100% plant-based. The journey was tough, but it was worth it. As soon as she gave up dairy, her heath transformed. But her recovery went deeper than just the physical. Nicole had struggled with anorexia in high school. While she overcame the behaviors by becoming a fitness model, the self-loathing thoughts were still there. When she became vegan, those thoughts disappeared.

Choosing to go vegan was such an empowering and positive decision that it healed her psyche as well as her physical health. And now Nicole is dedicated to inspiring newbie and wannabe vegans with delicious plant-based food that can tempt even the most dedicated carnivore.

If you live close to LA, check out Nicole’s Pop Up event at Feastly’s Berry Loft on 25th May. The food is to die for AND there are great people to talk to – Allison, Suzy and Roxy will be there! This week’s theme is North Africa, so there will be plenty of exotic dishes on the menu. Get 20% off with the coupon code FoodHeals!

Check out Nicole’s YouTube channel for recipes and tutorials to veganize your dishes and live sustainably.

Nicole’s tips for living sustainably:

  • Be aware of the plastic you buy and throw away.

  • Bring your own bag – for groceries AND clothes shopping.
  • Avoid anything with a palm oil.
  • Check out Imperfect – the produce box delivery that raises awareness of food waste.

We want to answer some of our listener questions in this episode!

Our first question is from Laura, who wants to know which entrepreneurs we follow.

Here are some of our top favorites:

Megan wants to know juicer recommendations?

We have to refer you to Joe Cross’s website for the best juicers, he’s the expert. You can also take a look at BlenderBabes for the best blenders – she tests every one to bring you the best blender reviews.

And finally, do we like guided meditations?

Absolutely!! You really want to check out Sarah Clark’s guided fertility meditation. Highly recommended to help you manifest whatever you want. We love it!

—-

Sarah was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure at 28. She was told she would never have her own children. She went straight to the fertility clinic, and put her name on a list for a donor egg. She was lucky enough to conceive, and now has two beautiful children.

But her health got worse: sinusitis, colds, yeast infections, headaches, vertigo. Later, while studying health coaching, she discovered that she had a food intolerance. As soon as she eliminated allergens from her diet, all her health issues went away. Could these food intolerances have caused her ovarian failure? It’s hard to be 100% sure, but Sarah is now on a mission to let couples know there is a lot they can do with nutritional therapy to improve their fertility.

Check out her 3-day fertility diet challenge. Want to know how fertile you might be? Take her fertility quiz!

How can we balance a healthy lifestyle and living life? Sarah has the answers.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why we love Nutribullet.
  • The best juicer if you’re a food blogger.
  • What to do for a great overnight cleanse.

You go to the doctor because you think they have the answers, but these days doctors aren’t looking at what’s causing the illness. They’re much more interested in giving you a pill. So you take the pill, then you take another pill to counteract the side effects of the first pill. But there IS another option: nutrition, acupuncture, spirituality, emotional work, changing your lifestyle. While their background differs—Suzy was brought up on green juices and vitamins, while Allison grew up eating the standard American diet—they are both passionate advocates of a plant-based diet.

Are you following your dreams? If everyone on this planet did what they wanted, the world would be such a happy place. We wouldn’t even need to compete with each other, because we all have a unique energy and unique gifts… we all have a unique soul song. Whatever you want to do, do it. If you want to sing, if you want to write, if you want to be a parent… do what brings you joy every day. That’s how we flourish.

If we can do a little thing every single day, we can change the world!

Relationships. They are complicated things. Have we put too much expectation onto marriage? People used to get married to carry on the family farm or form new family links. Now, thanks to fairytales and Disney, we expect some perfect thing, to be swept off our feet, to never argue. But in fact, it isn’t the long heart to hearts at 2am that keep a couple together, but rather those everyday moments—going shopping together, taking out the trash so that your partner doesn’t have to, holding each other’s hand during a movie. You need to learn your own love language.

Perhaps because of all the expectations we place on marriage, divorce statistics are through the roof. Leanne Linsky is one of those statistics. Married at just 22 to her first serious boyfriend, Leanne found herself divorced three years later. A few years later, she followed the same pattern: married again, and divorced within a few years. She was crushed. But she was also determined that it would not be the end of her.

After her second divorce, Leanne lay, in a fetal position, on her bedroom floor – she knew she had to make major changes. But she didn’t know what she wanted. Married so young, she didn’t know who she was. Determined to step into her true self, she started saying YES to everything. Her life began to shift. She felt a new strength. She vowed that no matter what she did, she was not going to grow old, with nine cats, bitter and hateful of men.

One of the things Leanne said a big YES to was standup comedy. Once she started taking the classes, she was hooked. Joining the two things she knew best, comedy and divorce, Leanne launched Life Lafter Divorce two years ago, offering improv classes to fellow divorcees. Improv is about not caring, it’s about letting go—you never know what’s coming. If you try to control it, it fails…. A bit like a marriage! Leanne has created a safe space where people can let go of their pain, realize they are not alone, and use laughter to heal. Her podcast interviews a variety of guests about their divorce experiences and “haha” moments. Check out her website for her next improv workshops!

What you’ll learn:

  • How Suzy fell in love with improv.
  • How comedy can help you heal.
  • Can playing be more powerful than morphine for pain relief?

According to the stats, we’re eating on average two portions of fruits and vegetables a day…. And this includes ketchup and potato fries! Truth is, for optimum health, we need to be eating more like between 5 and 10. Sounds like a lot to chew? This is where blending comes in. You can throw it all in a blender and drink your veggies!

Tarashaun always knew she wanted to work for herself. She began her entrepreneurial journey by selling jewelry on eBay. When she bought a high-power blender, she knew she had to share its magic with others. Smoothies, soups, ice cream, grinding grains—the versatility of this machine motivated Tarashaun to launch BlenderBabes and inspire people to make more than just smoothies. If you’re confused about blending, BlenderBabes is the site for you. She takes blenders through rigorous testing and offers honest reviews to help you choose your perfect kitchen companion.

Tarashaun also has an incredible healing story to share. She overcame a decade of disordered eating and wants to share her experience to help others. So many of us have an unhealthy relationship with food. For Tarashaun, reading The Secret opened her eyes to how she could use self-love and acceptance to heal. An eating disorder doesn’t have to last forever—it is possible to move forward from it, and self-love is an essential part of that.

If you want to dive into health, why not give Tarashaun’s Blender Cleanse a go? It’s a five-day program that helps you prepare your body for the cleanse, and provides enough nutrients and diversity to keep you satiated. Unlike a juice cleanse, you won’t be “hangry.”

What you’ll learn:

  • Juicing vs blending: which is best?
  • What happened during Suzy’s juice fast.
  • The most important part of any detox – that most people fail to do.
  • One ingredient to help curb “hangry-ness.”
  • The theory behind cleansing.
  • How can blending help you heal?
  • Why you need to include potatoes into your diet.
  • How step into self-love.
  • How to make a vegan bulletproof coffee, with a twist.
  • Tarashaun’s top tips for newbie food bloggers or anyone starting their business.

One in two people in the USA suffer from a chronic illness—365 million people. Amy Kurtz was one of them. She understands the loneliness that comes with a debilitating condition, and the frustration of going to doctor after doctor being offered nothing but pills.

At 14, Amy’s life changed dramatically. She bent down to pick up a book, and felt a shooting pain up her spine. And this pain simply didn’t go away. For ten years, she took the heavy-duty pain killers and muscle relaxants she was prescribed. Then, at 25, during a trip abroad, she picked up a parasite that tipped her body’s balance completely. She gained 30 pounds in 30 days. She couldn’t keep any food down, and she couldn’t go to the bathroom. She was bedridden for a month. Specialists told her food allergies didn’t matter, and kept prescribing antibiotics and pills. Finally, a doctor told her that her colon would never work, and she might as well have it removed. This was rock bottom.

But Amy didn’t give up. She knew she had to do something to help herself. She stopped eating gluten. Just two days after, her pain disappeared, as though it had never existed. She embarked on a holistic healing journey, empowering herself with the knowledge to heal her mind, body and spirit. She’s now a certified health coach, Pilates instructor, author and speaker.

Chronic conditions are often invisible – people don’t see them, and those suffering rarely speak about their illness for fear of being belittled or ridiculed. Amy woke up one day and realized she had to write a book and share her story. She wanted to create a collection of information to help people with chronic illness rebalance their bodies and move into health. Her book Kicking Sick is a collection of healing stories and Glow Warrior strategies to heal the spiritual, emotional and nutritional. Written to spark a new way of thinking, Kicking Sick helps tailor your lifestyle to transform you from the inside out and get you back into balance.

What you’ll learn:

  • What it was like being “the sick chick.”
  • How Amy overcame victim-mode and transformed herself.
  • What made Amy decide not to go down the conventional medicine route.
  • How to move away from fear into healing.
  • The difference between healing and curing.
  • How to become a Glow Warrior and inspire others.
  • Tips for budding authors and holistic entrepreneurs.
  • The first place to start to make yourself feel better.
